How Models as High-Speed Kites Fly (Read 10238 times)

They are airplanes that are flown as kites.  If you can fly at the seashore, you could definitely try one, since all they need is smooth, consistent wind.  I don't have instructional videos yet because there is no product.  You would have to build one.  This forum shows how to build a wood and paper one.  They fly great but crash rather destructively. 

Since posing on this forum, I've built a few from EPP foam and carbon tubes with either paper or mylar covering and let kite flyers fly them.  If you can fly a 2 line kite like a parafoil or stunt kite, they are not hard.  The EPP planes fly right into the ground at 70 mph and don't break, or can be taped up in a minute.  I build them in 2 to 4 foot wingspans and fly them on 20 to 40 lb spectra fishing line.  A pair of 100 foot lines costs about $5.  An EPP kite costs about $50 to build, about the same as a Guillows kit.

This past summer at the Bay Area Sport Kite clinic day I flew a 3 foot span kite up to 100 mph kitespeed as recorded by a radar gun my wife was using in about 15 mph of wind.  In less than 10 mph of wind, we recorded 59mph kite speed with a 4 foot span kite.   I also flew these kites at the America's Cup races on Crissy Field in San Francisco.  While the boats were going 3 times the windspeed, these kites are going up to 8 times it! 

I've been launching ones with tubular tailbooms by sticking a wire or carbon rod in the ground angled up, slipping the tailboom of the kite over it, then just pulling on the lines to get it off the ground. You can also launch them by having a partner hold it up in the wind and letting go.  This is how I launch the wooden planes.  It works well if you have over about 10mph windspeed.  Below that, a very careful throw can help.

thats pretty cool. i didnt even know about that kind of flying. is it hard to do? do have any instuctional videos on the basics, like launching it. is it just a regular kite flying?. i've flown kites alot at the seashore. is it similar?

Hi George,

Thanks for your interest.  I've been using mostly Guillow's 400 series warbird kits, so they run about $50 each, plus covering and dope, which is another $50 or so but lasts for several models.  I've probably spent the same on flying lines, but again, that makes several sets. Since it's a new aspect of modeling, you might have to build a few planes to get it working well, but if you live in a windy area with good fields for kite flying, it's a lot of fun.

What does it cost to get involved in this type of flying ?
I already have a lot of models that might be used to start this with ?
this is the first time I have found mention of this sport !

Hi Tom,

Happy New Year!  I've built several new kites since the Me109:  a Hawker Hurricane from a Dumas kit, a second Guillow's Spitfire, a Gilllow's Mustang that I haven't covered yet, and I'm in the middle of a Guillow's P38. 

I'd love to show you how they fly, but we may have to wait until Spring.  I haven't been able to fly much due to insufficient wind or wind direction that makes me face into the sun. I'm still flying with my wife at Cesar Chavez park in Berkeley.  She's really into regular stunt kites, so we're out there quite a bit.

A key to getting models working well as high-speed kites is getting is exactly the right incidence difference between the wing and tail.  For a plane that is relatively easy to control, 5 degrees difference in incidence works well.  For a more advanced, speed-oriented flyer, 4 degrees is better.  Less accuracy in the turns, but extremely smooth at high speed.  The 4-5 degree range assumes that you build the tail about 1/4" thick with an upside-down asymmetrical (flat-topped) airfoil sanded into it.  If you go with a flat plate stabilizer like in the kit, you can go with another degree, and you would probably want to enlarge the stab 10-20% from scale.  I recommend the thicker, airfoil-shaped stab, since it's stronger, lower drag and looks more to scale. 

You have to build that angle very accurately, and it's nice to have a digital incidence meter to check it.  Here's what I got:
