A fairly complete explanation of turbulator strips on model aircraft wings is found here on RCGroups: Click Here

In cracked rib wing constructions they are the balsa strips that run from the root rib to he wing tip to assist in forming the airfoil and accomplish the same effect of the turbulator strips mentioned in the RCGroups link.

What exactly do they do for me? Would not a spar between the leading edge and a spar at the high point of the air work just as well? I have seen mention of the frequently, but nothing on the "how & why" of them.
