Hello all,

I have been recovering from a heat attack I had on July 3rd so I have not been doing any building, I have completed enough of my redesign of the Bell 30 to start construction, looks like I will be starting this on the weekend, will post progress and photos soon.

Cheers, Ray K.

Ray...
Glad to hear you're alright!  I'm suffering with some heat  distress myself.  It's 101F here in So. West Washington State.  No air conditioning and the oscillating fan just blows hot air!!!!
Stay cool and post when you can.  I look forward to another great heli build!
Tom

Thanks Tom, I am on the mend,  ;) many life style changes but that's life, this will be a simplified build, not much detail but should look decent, should take no more that 2 to 3 weeks to complete, new gear box and most mechanical parts have already been built.

Cheers, Ray K.

The gear box is made out of a variety of material, box is made from 1/16" balsa and sheeted with 1/32" ply.
Beveled gears are custom ordered, the rest is just brass eyelets, brass washers, nylon washers, styrene tubing and 3/32" DIA aluminum tubing. Takes me an hour to 2 hours to make one.  :) will post a close up of gear box and parts that are used tomorrow.

Cheers, Ray K.

Hello All,

Sorry for my absents on this, just have had no drive to build much but I need to get back on track here.

I am trying out some new casting material to make gears, gear box and maybe even the pulleys and more?

I should start casting this weekend and I will go from there, pictures coming soon.  :)

Cheers, Ray K.

Fuselage formers being installed, note former F4 is the mitered gear box former, see the balsa rail, both halves will have this rail, these rails will allow the gear box to slide up and down for alignment to the drive shaft, once alignment is made then it will be locked down in final position.

I googled the Bell 30 and it's an interesting model.  Looks like the later models had a tricycle gear setup instead of the tail dragger....It's interesting to see that it was yellow overall.   I look forward to seeing this one come together.  Great to see your other birds in flight.

Hi Tom, I had built the tri-geared version a long time ago, it flew but the gear made it heavy, I will make mine silver overall, I think that's what color it started out in and was painted yellow when it was doing flight demonstration shows.

Almost done, just need windshield and main rotor blades and she is ready to fly, Sunday?

If I were to change anything on this model I would move the main gear one bay up right behind pilot, the reason for this is because with the nose plug in place the model tips over onto it's nose, it is not nose heavy it is because the main gear is right at the C/G, I did not see this until it was to late for my model but when I finalize the plans this change will be incorporated. My model will have to have a thin wire in the nose like a skid wire to prevent the model from tipping onto it's nose before take off.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I think you/and your new pilot are going to be pleased with this chopper!  Looks fantastic.  Good luck on the maiden!

Hi Tom, Thanks, I did notice something else I would change, I did another comparative measurement and the main rotor mast is to high, this needs to be cut down around 1 inch shorter, this is easily done on my model and I will have this corrected when I get home from work tonight. ;) Depending on how the tail rotor acts I may be able to cut down on the DIA of the tail rotor as well, this will help reduce some weight in the tail, again we shall see.

Cheers, Ray K.

Thanks Tom, I am trying to make these as easy as possible to build, I am thinking of doing an early bird series to start with, pioneering helicopters, Bell, Sikorsky, Piasecki, ect, then move on to military and civilian helicopters.

Here is were I am at right now, windshield on and rotor blades made just need to finish sealing them and final assembly.

Outstanding Ray!  I hope you'll do a tutorial some day on the rotor blades and how they're made and finished.  This is really something!

Thanks Tom, I will have to do that, the rotor blades are fairly simple, I cut out each rotor blade pattern from 1/16" balsa and just eye ball sand them to an airfoil shape and seal with liquid floor wax, about 6 to 8 thin coats, sanding in between each coat, another way is to put a few light coats, 2 to 3 of thin CA and sand that smooth, either way not a lot of weight is added.  ;)

Cheers, Ray K.

OK, the Bell is now finished and ready to fly, weight is 70 grams with a rotor DIA of 26 inches, I have a 3 day weekend so I will try for flight then. She should fly with no issues.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Agree with Tom, a great creation. I've been following your creation from the start and must say your skills are absolutely terrific. Your casting and design methods are inspiring and you tissue work is also top drawer. Thanks for the posts and the picture of the creator, glad to see who is behind this great work.

Tried a power up test with rotors on and noticed the rotor hub was not true, this caused an uneven tracking of the blades resulting in wobble, making a new rotor hub no big deal, will be ready to try again tomorrow, while I am at it I am making an access hatch to the main gear box assembly, will post pictures tomorrow.

Ok, new rotor hub made, kept this very simple, no fly bar this time, main rotor shaft too long, made new one and shortened it, made opening for assess hatch, hatch door is drying, more tomorrow.

Thanks Shipwreck, I have been designing rubber powered helicopters for over 40 years now and I still don't have everything figured out yet, sometimes my models will fly and sometimes they don't, I attempted another flight on the Bell this morning and she refuses to get off the ground, I think the 2 to 1 drive ratio is not enough to get the rotors up to flying speed, I will put more rubber in it in the morning and try again, worst case, I will build another one.  ;)

Cheers, Ray.

Ray, hope the additional power will do the trick.  Too bad you can't just swap out the gears like a quick change rearend in a hotrod!

She FLY'S!!!!   :D

A brief one but she works, right after lift off she banked to the right, flew sideways and I had to catch it, I have videos and will post in a day or 2, I will make another flight tomorrow in am after I put some counter weight on the left wheel, I hope I can get a straight lift off and long flight. Just a few changes need to be made on the final version of this model and she will be a good flyer.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Cheers, Ray.

Your test flight area looks a bit too crowded. I cringed at the thought of a crash that might destroy that beautiful work. But it seems that helicopters are quite a 'hands on' machine. Good work!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Thanks guys,

The Bell has a lot of weight in the nose and she still fly's backwards, still need a little more in the nose, I will try another flight soon.

I need to just make a few minor changes to this model and she should be a good flyer, I am real close.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

If it seem balanced on the rotor shaft, maybe the head angle is slightly off. Might also be that the fairly large dia. tail rotor is is exerting some down force.  Just a thought...

All good points to look at, just a little tweaking is needed.
