Title: Hiller X-2-235
Post by Ray_K on Jul 13th, 2018 at 6:49pm

I have been toying with the idea of building a scale co-axial model helicopter with an internal gear box and drive system so that the rubber motor will be within the fuselage and not direct drive in a tube. I should have the gear box done by tomorrow and go from there depending on how much packing my wife needs me to do before our move in Sept.

Cheers, Ray K.

Ray,
This is looking very good...I'm still contemplating how to make contra rotating setup for my Schneider Trophy plane with the gears you sent me.

Is that a quarter in your pictures?
Tom

Ok, I made modifications to the gear set and made the silicone mold to cast the 4 to 1 gear set, this new gear set came out to 3 grams, looks like I have all the mechanical components ready, all I need to do is build the model to put this stuff into and see if it works.

Ray,
You're ability to make those gears is fantastic!  I'm jealous of that skill!  I look forward to seeing this new power train at work!

You and me both brother, the process of making gears is really not that hard, most important thing is getting the silicone mold right, you have to work it to get all the air bubbles out and get the silicone in all the nooks and crannys before it starts to set up, air bubbles ruin molds, casting them are easy, you just have to be fast on the pouring after mixing the stuff I use sets up in 3 minutes so time is critical.

Hi Ray,
When you make the plugs for the  gear molds, do you use metal ones or do youcarve the gears out. I always wanted to do this just have not had time to research it. Thanks for sharing skill and knowledge.
Paul

Hi Paul,

I hunt around until I find a plastic gear that I think is close to what I need then I just machine these gears into what I want, I make the gears thinner, lighter by adding lighting holes, change the bore size, ect, once I get the gears to where I want them then I make a master silicone mold of the modified gears and now I can cast as many as I want.

Hi Paul,

This one is pretty simple, as you see by the drawing I was going for keel and former construction, but I decided to redo this drawing and make it side frames and sub former construction, less balsa used, lighter construction, I will have the new sheet # 1 drawing done by tomorrow, this would be a good helicopter model to start with, mechanics are pretty simple and the co-axial gear box is not hard to build.

If you would like to try one, I will be looking for someone to try and build this as a test once I have all the drawings done.

Cheers, Ray K.

Ray I would give it a go. Have to get the stuff to make the gears and info from you. May take me a bit to build but would be a fun project to do. My hand is doing better but still alot of trouble doing the finish work at this time. Thanks Ray.

Hi Paul, I am doing well Thank you, busy with my move and overtime at work so not a lot of time to play but sheet 2 is completed, more than what this photo shows, and all formers and patterns have be drawn out and checked for fit.
Pinion drive has also been made, she is ready to build but I won't be able to start it until the 2nd week in Sept.
If you send me your mailing address I will send you plans and gear sets so you can build it along with me.

Not sure how I will make the upper and lower rotor hub sets yet but I have a few ideas, it will probably involve styrene and nylon tubing. ;)

Hi Paul, I am well, I haven't forgot about this one, everything is about ready, just working on a simple helicopter design for the helicopter cook up so that all will be able to build it, once I have that done I will get back to this project and send you everything you will need to build this along with me.

Cheers, Ray K. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
