Always great to hear about these planes form those who flew or worked on them...  Thanks for the input.  I didn't realize there were so many options for the PT's over their life time till I started doing some research...

I worked in shop where we bought 13 wrecked PT's from a longtime ag company, out of Tracy, CA. All had been fitted with Wright 975's (IIRC these originally came from BT-15's). Most post WWII ag ops used 450 P&W, but this fellow specialized in Wright power for his "Stearmans".
The fuselages came home on three trailers. I was pulling the one with 5 fuselages piled on. Intersting ht concerns at overpasses! About three weeks earlier we had brought home five complete Wright engines, plus three grape bins full of matched exhaust parts etc. Operator still had a ROOM full of new Wright cylinders still wrapped in cosmoline waxed paper!

I get a kick out of the "Super Stearman" moniker. AFAIK, basic PT-17 airframe is STC'd for 450hp. 985 cu. in. P&W, as built. It was super from the beginning and is built more like a truck than an airplane! The usual engine fitted to wartime Pt-17's was the Cont. 225 hp or  Jacobs,

The stearman had quite a few engines.  Many add ons after they were adapted for other uses.  My Stearman was a crop duster with a hot P+W engine.  Here is my rendition of the powerplant.

The PT-18 had a Jacobs R-755  YouTube Walk Around

Might be the one your thinking of....with the pushrod tubes...

The radial with the big exhaust collector on the front is the Wright 760 Naval Aircraft Factory N3N

The modified airshow "Super Stearman" uses a Pratt and Whitney R-985 radial...usually cowled... Eddie Andreini's Super Stearman  a nice read.

Curious about the pushrod tubes, if thats what they are.  One side of the head has more fins than the other.  I guess thats the exhaust side, with an exhaust tube to collect them all.  I saw some with the exhaust tube in the front.
The search goes on.....

EXCELLENT PIC !!! Thanks. I went hunting last night and could not find a decent shot. Thanks.  
Saw a couple different motors for that plane.  Folks used what they had.  That is the one modeled.  Thats the one I will do.   There was another, with more cylinders and pushrods in the front.  The one you posted is the one that came with the kit and was most common.

Well, I did it.  Cant say when I will build the rest of the plane, but after seeing John do his engines, I gotta try it.  The engine is the only reason I didn't do this plane along time ago.  Traded a 400 series Mustang and a 400 series Zero that I got off evilbay.  Had 2 Mustangs, only need one.  
In the end, I saved a couple bucks.  
btw, anybody know what motor that was?
