I will check the incidence before I go out again.

I had some glue and wood with me, but it was 1/32 and not 1/16
so maby thats why the trim didn't change that much.

Incidence is very critical on these catapult gliders.  From what you've told us you must have had negative incidence on the horizontal stab compared to the wing which probably caused the loop.  A little bit of incidence goes a long way.  Some build with 0 degree incidence on both wing and horizontal stab.

Glad you had a good time.  Too bad you lost the catapult rubber!  I suggest taking extra with you to the flying field along with some glue and scrap 1/16" sq strips for gurney flaps as you trim.

I tried my Okha glider today,
This is how we left

I tryed to follow the directions given in the recently posted video.

I think when I handglide him everything is like it should be.
But when I tryed the gentle power, the only consistent result was
a big loop and than a low circling dive.
Whatever I tryed to trim (up elevator, down elevator, left roll , right roll) It would always loop.
When I tryed full power, the behaviour was the same but slightly more violent resulting in a lawn dart.
At my last attempt I ripped off the stab and lost the rubber band on my only slingshot.
With the stab loose I glued it back on with more incidence but could not try powered launches again.
Impossible to find my rubber band, as  he was perfectly camouflaged

All and all I had great fun and cant wait to get back out there.
An hour went by quickly.

Pete...thanks for the bump and posting of your Panther and Cougar Catajets.  I've got to get some of these made for the grandsons this summer when they come up from CA.  They loved flying them and I'm sure they'd like to do it again.  Great stuff.  CAUTION TO ALL WHO READ THESE POST...CATAJETS ARE HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!

I completely forgot to follow up with photos of the Cougar and Panther catajets.  The Panther (straight winged version) turned out to be the better flyer, being much easier to trim.  There is a difference in the fuselage length between the two, with the Panther having a longer snout and more forward located cockpit

My first build of the Panther was with the "short" Cougar fuz (reminder to myself - check drawings/photos before assembling Roll Eyes) - required a LOT of weight to balance.  Dark blue tissue with silver inked panel lines on the fuselage looks great, but adds too much weight in the standard construction.  Still flys OK, but max to date is only about 20 seconds.  The "proper" Panther with only two coats of thinned clear Acrylic gets 30 seconds consistently with a max to date of over a minute.

Hi All,

I finally got the Me 163A gliding.  It was after making the adjustments that Pete and JetPlaneFlyer suggested.  I cut out the elevons and added twist tie wire hinges.  I set them showing up elevon on both wings and added more balast to the nose.  Was able to get a decent glide that looks very promising.

I've also started Pete's plans for the Reichenberg Fi 103 Manned Flying Buzz Bomb V1.

By Pete's instructions all the parts were cut as per the plans.  Then the wing was sanded into an airfoil using the 30% line on the plans for the break in the airfoil.  I also tapered the wing from root to the tip from 3/32 inch to approximatel 1/32 at the tip.  I did this on the Ba 349 Natter and she flies great.  Check the report on the first flights on that thread.  I expect the same or better performance on this model.  I couldn't wait to finish the dihedral on the main wing, to see what she looked like together so here's a shot of the mockup.

Regards,
Tom

Hi all,
Here's my version of the Me-163A Komet....This is from the plan posted by Marcelo on the Fi-103 Reichenberg thread on HPA.

I chose the Red scheme that was used only once on one of the first Komets rolled out for squadron use.  To honor Von Richtoffen and the flying circus of WWI.

fuse is 9.25 inches and wingspan is 15 inches.  Haven't weighed mine yet.  Feels pretty light for its size.  My first try at a tailless aircraft.  I have gotten pretty level glides of approximately 15 feet.  Haven't tried on the catapult yet.

Here's some pics...

Thanks Thyme and Staub for the comments.

Staub...great Idea for the F9F's combinding the Panther and Cougar. Ought to work great.  Can't wait to hear about the Scorpion and how she flies.

Regards
Tom

Nice drawing Tom.  I'm compiling my templates for the F9F to be able to buld either the Panther or Cougar.  I made the model direct from the 3 views.  I've also done a Beta plan for the F-89 Scorpion.

Soon as I get the prototypes built and flying, they'll be posted to the Plans Gallery on HPA.

Hi all,
I was asked over on Hippocket Aeronautics Site to draw up a plan for the F94C and I have it done and posted there in the plans section.

Thought I might try to post it here.  Not sure if it will work here. Never tried to add a PDF file.  It is a fun little flyer.

So here goes ...oops won't work Lips Sealed Cry Angry if anyone would like a copy, personal message me with your email and I'll attach it and send it to you.

Regards,
Tom

Greetings,
Got to go flying today...here are some pictures...
Launching the Orange Ohka

The Ohka and Leader of my retreival team Ethan 4yrs old.

Ohka banking right

Ohka recovering from loop

F94C banking...Got a 14 second flight twice with this bird...is a great flyer.

F94C had a great glide that banked slightly to the right giving a very controlled flight.  With just under a full load on the tan rubber she would climb out at a slight left banking climb...then tansition to a nice shallow bank to the right giving a nice long glide.
Trees are further away than they look ...another nice flight

I also found out that the tan rubber stretched to it's max would cause a high speed large open loop returning the planes right back at head level in a very swift manner Shocked Shocked Grin Roll Eyes so max flights required less than max stretch of the rubber band. Here the F94 recovers from the max launch loop on the backside.

Regards and thanks Thyme for sharing such a great little glider and opening up the avenue to more.

John and Thyme,
Thanks for the comments...they all fly but require some speed to do it.  Hope to try cat launch Saturday...

Well the Ohka is catching and leads to other experiments...Orange, Grey and then branching out to 50's U.S. Jets...F94C Starfighter intercepter based on the Lockheed T-33 trainer with afterburner added.
Markings are Red and Black Sharpie pens...Blue canopy is Hobby Acrylic paint purchased at Michael's (an art/hobby and florist supply store here in the area)

Always been a favorite of mine...sooooo   Here's my attempt at another cat launched glider...F94C....
Tried to save some weight and didn't seal the balsa before painting...IT'S SILVER PAINT TOM????? Shocked Roll Eyes Lips Sealed  always seal balsa before painting with silver paint Roll Eyes Shocked Grin Grin

Fuselage is 11 inches and wingspan is 9 inches haven't weighed her yet but she's the lightest of all three.

Here's a couple of pics...its ok but next time will seal the balsa on silver jets...By the way, glides great...tomorrow will see how she cats...weather permiting. Grin

Those are beautiful models, hope they fly as good as they look.

When you begin to fly you are issued two bags, one full of luck and an empty one for experience.&&The object is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

Sky, Your art work is amazing. Feel free to add at any time.
Have done the little store bought gliders many times over the years.
Its good that you have a helping hands. Not enough folks spend time with the wee ones anymore.
Dont know where I picked it up, but, I heard that if you dont catch them when they are young, you will lose them when they are older.
