Ooohhhhh....  They look so good it makes me want to give up on these stick and tissue models and take up knitting!  Never in a zillion years could I come close. Cry

The Keleher Lark peanut in my hangar was done with white Esaki chalked with PanPastel titanium white, sealed with Krylon Satin clear spray:

The white areas on the Utility Special and Broussard were done the same way.

I made a test piece with gym chalk and it came out battleship grey.  Fine for the lower halves of some WWII navy planes, but I'm building a Piper Cherokee!

I wonder what Dave Rice used on the gorgeous Ambrosini on the cover of the July-August FAC News?  Is that Pan Pastel?  If so, I'm sold!

I highly recommend PanPastel artist chalk powders.  Super-fine powder, brilliant colors and whites, goes on easily and produces a very nice finish.  One $8 container of white has done half a dozen models for me and has about 1/3 remaining.

Not having any exposure to the gymnastic chalk I don't know of it's chemical makeup.  As long as it doesn't react with the finishing paint/dope you might be ok!  But I'd run some test tissue first!

How about using gym chalk for white models?  It's already finely powdered.

One thing I've discovered after a few experiments is that it works better if you powder the chalk on a piece of sandpaper and then apply it to the tissue.  It is much more even than rubbing the chalk directly on the tissue which leaves streaks and scratches.

Here are a few planes where I used a chalked tissue base.

Photo 1: Fairchild 24 c8 (Dave Stott pseudo Dimer) - color printed tissue (shoe-box) chalked with the corresponding shade to intensify the color and make the tissue a bit more opaque; tissue registration on the wing.  Only the white done, as I only had white "blackboard" (school) chalk.  You can see the rough texture due to the coarse nature of the cheap chalk.

Photo 2 & 3: Gourdou Leseurre C1 (Lee's Hobbies P'nut) - Stained Esaki tissue (coffee) and brown chalked.  Louvers and tail flash - printed.  Insignia and other markings cut from printed tissue and chalked (white) for color intensity.

The better the chalk quality (equals higher cost Wink), the better it works.  Custom colors can be achieved by blending colors - as in real pastel drawing - and are drawn out when the tissue is doped.

The Fairchild photos were taken today (I didn't have any close-ups of the finished model!) tho the plane is nearly ten years old!

Yes it will stick.  The chalk is rubbed into the tissue.  As you'll see you don't leave the excess chalk on the tissue when applying it. Just make sure you use the proper pastels that are not oil based!

Has anyone actually tried chalking.  I'd like to give it a try, but am wondering if the tissue will have trouble sticking to the frame.  I am using a glue stick and am not sure if the chalked surface will stick.  I'll try it and find out and report back.

Found this tutorial on chalking tissue for an opaque finish to the tissue.  It's on the Easy Built Kit manufacturer's site: Click Here

I haven't personally chalked tissue but have seen several fine models using this finish...I plan on trying it soon.
Here's an example on Michael Stewart's site of Chris Parent's Peanut Neuport 16 Click Here
