The Keleher Lark peanut in my hangar was done with white Esaki chalked with PanPastel titanium white, sealed with Krylon Satin clear spray:

The white areas on the Utility Special and Broussard were done the same way.

I highly recommend PanPastel artist chalk powders.  Super-fine powder, brilliant colors and whites, goes on easily and produces a very nice finish.  One $8 container of white has done half a dozen models for me and has about 1/3 remaining.

How about using gym chalk for white models?  It's already finely powdered.

I kind of think I remember chalk grinders at AC Moore and Michaels. Price of Esaki these days I am not sure how much testing samples I would do..lol

Here are a few planes where I used a chalked tissue base.

Photo 1: Fairchild 24 c8 (Dave Stott pseudo Dimer) - color printed tissue (shoe-box) chalked with the corresponding shade to intensify the color and make the tissue a bit more opaque; tissue registration on the wing.  Only the white done, as I only had white "blackboard" (school) chalk.  You can see the rough texture due to the coarse nature of the cheap chalk.

Photo 2 & 3: Gourdou Leseurre C1 (Lee's Hobbies P'nut) - Stained Esaki tissue (coffee) and brown chalked.  Louvers and tail flash - printed.  Insignia and other markings cut from printed tissue and chalked (white) for color intensity.

The better the chalk quality (equals higher cost ), the better it works.  Custom colors can be achieved by blending colors - as in real pastel drawing - and are drawn out when the tissue is doped.

The Fairchild photos were taken today (I didn't have any close-ups of the finished model!) tho the plane is nearly ten years old!

Has anyone actually tried chalking.  I'd like to give it a try, but am wondering if the tissue will have trouble sticking to the frame.  I am using a glue stick and am not sure if the chalked surface will stick.  I'll try it and find out and report back.
