Flew the Penny Copter today. Of course the good flight is not on vid. Will fix that next week.
I need to improve the trans lock and I think I'm ready to stretch wind.

Got it to fly in the living room.
It's all about balance. I will try again at the field where there is more space. Maybe get a vid. If that works out, I will add more rubber.

I can see where the balancing thing could go on forever. I will work with it a bit more, but I need to break off and get some work in on the Sperry. This weekend I am going to move back out into the shop. Hopefully the weather has stopped "weathering" on my parade.  Grin Grin Grin

I added a pilot. Turns out he makes good ballast in the right spot. I used a Guillows pilot. Might give him some pedals to push. He needs paint.

I shortened the main rotors. Worked out pretty well.

Thanks Tom. Its more than I expected also.  Roll Eyes

Here's the launch pad and new hub assembly installed. The wire you see is the trans lock. When its wound up I use a longer wire that pulls thru the bottom. The base doubles as a jig to work on it with because everything moves and it's hard to hold. During flight tests, the base mounts to a camera stand.

I used ca that is foam safe because it's what I had. Turns white when it dries. Looks like poo.  Cry

The blades are too long. They are hitting the tail rotor. Cant decide whether to shorten them or extend the boom. Both ideas have merit. Because they are so long, they turn slower. Whether to shorten them depends on if they are turning to slow for flight. If she picks up, I will extend the boom. that will make the tail more effective.

One thing for sure about helie's. There is alot going on all at once.

WoW  Thyme...

Outstanding craftsmanship Smiley Smiley

Heli's have a whole lot more precisions parts than the things I'm used to making.  Looking great!

I can't wait to see this progress.   Cool Cool Cool Grin

The hole in the main drive pulley is for locking it while I work on it and for launching it from the base. Will show pics of that later, I cant find them right now.

Here are the old kit blade and the new one sent to me by Ray. You can see why the center hole needed to be enlarged.
Here are the parts I made to do it. Then just glued it up.

Here it is as I got it. It was completely out of balance.

Here's a link to some flying vids.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-29T7rx3KJ0

While your there, check out our channel. Lots of cool stuff.

Anyway
Helis balance in many ways. The main blades. The pitch blades. The heli itself. The tail rotor blades. And then there's the balancing act of launching it without putting your eye out.  Shocked Grin

I built a stand to launch from and work on it with. Will post a pic of that later.
I had to build a new hub to use the new blades. I took the old one apart and cleaned it up. Then the fun started....

If I build one from scratch, I will build it slightly different. I did open up the slot where the wire passes thru the outside of the tube.
Sorry the drawing is sideways. I thought I fixed that.
Point "A" is how it came to me. The ring thing was on the inside. The wire itself made the other side of the "rings" and that is what holds the hub center to the drive wire. The bend in the wire, "C", was pretty round so the tube would bind on it. That makes it harder to balance and prevents it from self balancing in flight. If you launch crooked, it would not recover.
I sharpened that bend with pliers.

Plan "B" is how I will build one in the future. I will also cut the skirt off the tube. It serves no purpose that I know of and it is just something else to be out of balance when everything gets spinning.

Got this from one of the guys I fly with. No one could get it to fly so they charged me with the task. I am the only one who flies Free Flight rubber so they said "Give it to the rubber guy, see what he can do with it"
The they grinned and walked away.

We will see who grins last.  Smiley Smiley

Truth is, I never saw myself trying a heli. Never saw the light. Now that I have been working with this one, it's a bit of a challenge and I find that I like it.
There's a man called Ray on HPA that has been building a Sikorsky and it looks great! He has been guiding me. He also sent me a set of custom blades. They are the difference between night and day.
I had to modify the hub he sent, but that was kinda fun.
Here's his thread. Its a great read.

Because of my somewhat bizarre schedule, work has been hit and miss on this project. I will try to post the pics in order.
