G'day all;

I ment to also add a photo of an original Albatros in yesterdays post so here it is. Apparently there are only 2 in existance - one at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington DC , & one in the Australian War Memorial museum in Canberra (Australias capital city) - the one I've shown here. It went to the A.W.M. in 1918 after bieng shot down by an Aust. Flying Corps R.E.8 in 1917. It landed - intact - behind enemy lines & the pilot taken prisoner. It was removed in 2001 for restoration & returned to public display in 2008. (Must go & have a look one
day!)

Cheers for now!!

Hi Mitch

Quite fascinating footage of the troops picking over the wreckage, and also of the funeral.  Can't believe how clear it is considering it's nearly 100 years old.

Thanks for the link

G'day all
I figured I should add some info to my posts about the Red, Baron but I thought the same old stuff about one of the more famous aviators might be a bit boring. Then I came across some info about  an aussie conection to the great man on the Australian War Memorial site. So......because I am too lazy to try & type out heaps of info , here is a link to the A.W.M. site.

www.awm.gov.au/exhibitions/1918/people/rbaron.asp

It includes footage of the Barons funeral amongst other things.  I hope you all enjoy the site - I haven't finished exploring the site mysely yet.

Cheers for now!

Great build box Mitch,

Once you get her built, you'll want to build another box for protection and transport of the built model.

OUTSTANDING JOB Smiley

G'day all;
I didn't get any time to build this weekend - just too busy - but I did find time to make a box to keep the parts of my Albatros (or any future builds) in so I dont accidentally smash them. I would be REALLY annoyed if I did wreck the fuselage or a wing or something this far into the build! New golden rule - if I'm not working on a piece, it stays in the box!
(P.S. thanks for the positive comments guys-its good to have people to share my hobby with even if they are literally half a world away!)
Cheers for now!

Mitch,

She is looking lovely.  You'll love the mockup.  With the bones mocked up you almost don't want to cover it all up.

Scalloping on the fuselage formers is great.  You'll have a nice looking fuselage when she is covered.  Wings look terrific.  Well Done! Smiley

Keep us posted on the progress,

Found this scheme of Richthofen's DV on the net:  http://www.aerodrome24.de/en/aviation/kits/roden-1-72-albatros-d-v-manfred-von-r...

This chart of his aircraft:  http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/albatros%20dv

G'day Concretecow ;
I think this build is probably more complex than the Auster - fuselage 1/2 formers,1/16 notches for lots of stringers,lots more wing ribs etc. Also building scratch from "pre-cut" plans can be a bit tricky because not everything is as obvious without the pre-cut parts ie the landing gear & lower wing  attachment on this one for example. But part of the fun & satisfaction is working these sort of problems out. This is only my 3rd stick & tissue build so I'm probably more inexperienced than you mate-learning new things all the time!
Working on the undercarriage now,then the nose cowel. Might try carving a prop too so I've still got a way to go yet. Definitely more pics to come mate!
Cheers for now!

Hi Mitch

That's tidy looking work.  I'm really impressed with the wings especially - those scalloped trailing edges....  really looking good.  The fuselage formers will be fine scalloped.  I tried it on my Guillows Supercub and it really does avoid the "starving dog" look you can get if you don't do it.  Only the stringers show through.

How are you finding it compared to the Auster?  Don't know about you, but I found it quite hard going (and I still haven't finished).  I'm interested to see if it is down to the extra work of scratch building, the Auster in particular, both, or just me and my inexperience[smiley=rolleyes.gif]

Don't forget to post some pics of the mock-up, but I'm really looking forward to seeing it covered.  Presumably, as it's von Richthofen's plane, it had a fairly distinctive colour scheme?  I'm guessing largely red?

Keep up the good work

regards

Jon

G'day all;
A quick Albatros update - wings finished (even got the ribs the same size!!). I tried the scolloping thing on the fuselage formers - hope it looks ok with the tissue on.... I am busting to get some tissue on but I want to see it in a bare bones mockup first. I am REALLY enjoying this build ( have I mentioned that before? Ha Ha! )

Cheers for now!

G'day all;
Got the fuselage finished on the Albatros - I can't believe how light & fragile it is compared to the BF109. I see what people mean when they talk about Guillows wood being heavy! Now to start the lower wings. So far this is a very enjoyable build.

Cheers for now!

Nice jig!!! Those last few stringers wont affect the shape anyway, they run along the keel and by the time you get to that point, the shape is pretty much locked in.

Yep, if you want lite weight balsa, gotta mail order. Hollar if ya' need a link or two. For me, contest grade is for just that, contests. I only compete with myself. Nothing against contests, it's just that there are not any near me.
