My bad. Missed it where you had already done the bench test.

Nice work Pete. Really nice work. Gonna have to try something like that myself.
Really nice work! Thanks for sharing it with us. Smiley

I figured you'd already thought about this.  Sounds great.

Really nice job Pete!

The bench test went  fine with the 1 Kilo load (35 oz/in), and the "box" hadn't been wrapped (it is now, with fiberglass - more "peace of mind").

The pin can, at present, be forced out over the rear shoulder on the drill frame (NOT easily), but once a proper grip is installed it will be captive.  Unscrewing the grip will allow the pin to be swapped out - if needed.

Pete,

Is there any thing to keep the locking pin from coming completely out of the locking base?  If that fell out at the field, I'd bet it would be next to impossible to find, especially over grass!
Otherwise looks great and makes me want one!!!!

All looks pretty stout to me. Wrapping the lock unit with something couldnt hurt. Of course a bench test would be in order.
Looks like a really nice setup. Nice machine work.

Thanks for shareing this with us.

I had a comment by a F1b great to the effect that the locking gizmo is probably not necessary and would likely not hold up to a fully wound motor.  Possibly correct in the first instance and more than likely in the configuration shown in the previous photos.  Wood is not the best material for the lock, but this one is made with aircraft ply and maple - the ply being impregged with CA and the whole unit glued together (clamped) with aircraft grade Epoxy.  After the first practial tests, the "woody" will get a wrap of glass or Kevlar thread.  If I get access to some decent machining tools I'll make on out of Aluminium.

This morning, I stuck a 1 inch "arm" in the winding attachment an hung a 1 Kilogram jug on it (a bit over 35 oz.) with the lock engaged.  NO issues!

The lock also gives me peace of mind...

Great bit of engineering Pete...

I look forward to your reporting on it's successful use!

I worked up a simple lock mechanism for the winder.  Don't want the thing to start spinning in the event it has to be disengaged from the motor Roll Eyes.  This is something that I've not noticed on any winder, tho the big bucks units may have something.  In my opinion it is also a safety issue (the indoor crowd uses a "winding brake", tho all seem to be aftermarket additions).

Here's how I've addressed the issue (note: NOT yet "finished" - top retaining plate to be added):

Nice work! Are you going to put a hook on the end for the rubber?

Yup!  That is getting worked into the Ali piece being fitted into the busness end.  I have the unit ready for its first tests, hopefully today, but there are still a few tidbits that have to be added.  The spade grip, crank extension and one part I almost forgot till I reviewed Eduardo Yamin's conversion - namely a winding lock mechanism to keep a wound motor wound while fumbling with the hook release.  In some instances, a simple hook on the winder is/may be better.

Here's where it is now:

Not sure haow many of the members here follow along in the other FF Forums, so I'll post my hand drill conversion here also.

Since making the jump to the "larger" FF rubber planes, my little Peck winder would no longer be adequate Roll Eyes, so, I made use of one of the oldie hand drills I had been given.  I'll be making a captive winding fixture - the beginnings shown in this first couple of posts - a spade grip and an extended winding crank,  The photos are captioned and tell the major story of "howie dooddit".
