In a word...no.  Rubber motor was very short with intention of keeping it out of the aft section...nose moment was short in the extreme which meant packing in (taping to) considerable weight forward...which resulted in a way too heavy ship.  That all said...the empennage was too small...like it wasn't even there when it came to trimming.  So my kabob structure was too robust for this little ac...better to have built particularly light and sacrificed scale and looks...in order to fly.  We're all familiar with the dreaded "scale effect."  If I could shrink air molecules it would have flown like the proverbial bird.  There is much truth in the saying that "Bigger flies better." Anyway, looks pretty to me...I'm happy.

My other oldest SnT...another kabob-job.  Own plans...but empennage was too small.  I have tendency to do that on my own designs.  Somebody came out with an rc version around then...and Walt Mooney had a peanut version too.  It was a cutie, so I've kept it all these years.

In the interest of keeping my ac's together...this is my oldest extant SnT...A DH2, 20"ws...from 1978 (own plan).  I kept eyeballing these kabob skewers at the grocery store...and finally bought them for this project...they constitute the booms and landing gear axle.  Photo is complete with dust and faded brittle tissue.  Was good in a glide but no endurance because that short nacelle didn't leave much room for a rubber motor.  But...I was always partial to looks anyway...so.  You guys doing electric power nowadays would have a great time with this subject...and JohnO could really do a bangup job on a rotary Bentley. I have another build from the same time...also a kabob-job. Smiley  Next post....

Thank you very much for the compliments...everyone.  Truth is, it's all very humbling to see the wonderful efforts on this website of so many, many practitioners of this hobby.  It's marvelous that although hobby shops seemed to have disappeared, the builders are still alive and active. Smiley  Everyone has a personal emphasis from one extreme to the other, but it's all beautiful.  I love detail...and I love simplicity, too.  Thank you, again.

One more peanut from my display case...again 20-plus years old...a Neuiport 28.  I'm fond of this particular subject because it reminds me of the first Guillows kit that I built about 1957.  Guillows introduced me to great plastic details and die-cut parts...back when the dies were still sharp.  Note that the ailerons are on the lower wing only...as opposed to the usual top wing or even both.  It was that fact that saved Rickenbacker's bacon one day.  He managed in a dive to shed the fabric from his upper wing...but was able to tenderly achieve a landing amongst the friendlies...all because those ailerons remained functional.  He scored his first five victories while flying a "28."

More pnuts...the entire time I was building the two Sterling airplanes I couldn't help thinking that a true neophyte to the hobby would probably curse it all and give up!  Really, the design is a real challenge for any of us who are fat-fingered, young or old...and well, never mind...it's done.  Smiley  The green latex for whatever reason didn't go on well for the Zeke...but then I've never seen an island-based Japanese ac that didn't look hammered by the environment.  So...call it "weathered."

Hey, old and ratty on the ground, but beautiful in the air...besides, battle-damage helps to get the proper mood.  Looks good to me...build it again!

Does that nice Fokker D7 ever make me nostalgic for my stick
and tissue Fokker d7 RC slope glider I flew for 10 years on the
local beach dunes, it would stay up on hardly any breeze.
I had a popsicle prop to spin on the nose.
It got so ratty and warped I had to trash it.

Over the years I've driven myself nuts trying to find a decent 109 kit...and it's proven to be a real struggle.  Like the Guillows...shows an E3 on the box...turns out to be an earlier version, like a B,C, or D...or various old kit makers seemed to want to supply air intakes from other kits...always wrong for what they were advertising.  Joke is...build them all...then you can select what fits best.  Smiley  Truth is that it probably would be better to design and scratch build.  Here are my 109 efforts....

Whenever I get involved with a build, I tend to do a lot of research into the original subject.  The I-16 was actually a marvelous little ac...very much ahead of its time, technologically speaking...like retractable landing gear and ailerons that also served as flaps.  It was developed about a year after the advent of the Gee Bee R-1 racer and to my eye, its influence can easily be seen.  This little plane was the only fighter available in numbers for the Soviets during the first two years of the war.  Amazingly, there are four I-16's still flying...with original engine type!  Check it out on youtube.  My Rata is a peanut scale size ac.

You can put this kind of comment right on John's builds.  Just like a reply here.  I'm sure John would appreciate your comments.  I must agree with you regarding his craftsmanship!  Top Notch! Smiley
