I would imagine it would be like laminating a cutting board alternating the grain so it would be working to keep things the board flat.

That's a good idea...glue it together like a cutting board and plane it flat and your set.  You might want to glue a pine or harder border to keep it from warping.  Just a thought!

Maybe a little late for this thread...but....  Many years ago I constructed a couple of building boards...one for peanut models and the other for big stuff...one is about 20" long and the big one is something like 4'.

The two primary components are 1/2" plywood for a base...larger board uses heavy particleboard shelving.  The working surface is what used to be called "celetex soundboard."  At the time I was finishing my home interior and decided to soundproof the family room.  So I had material scraps to work with.  I'm sure it is still out there at the local hardware stores.  It is basically a board made of pressed fibers...easy to stick with pins and thumbtacks.

I secured the celotex to the working board with short roofing nails (can see the head of one in photo) and then finished the now composite edge with common duct tape.  Presto...very good working boards, very durable and portable...been using them now for 35 years. 

Of course I'm using pins, but they've worked well for me over the past half-century-plus.  Magnets look like they'd be nice...but then I'm an old dog, etc.  What I like most about these boards is that I can set them up in my shop or on a nice day, I can take them outside.  I can even use them while sitting at my desk in the den, or throw one in the SUV and go off to Arizona where I've been known to winter.  They can also be flipped and the bottom wood surface used while cutting balsa parts.

I suppose the biggest "point" is that I haven't worn them out throughout all these years of use.

Hey, when I was a mere boy I used to use the side of a cardboard box.  Worked great...until the next build...then I'd just get a new one.  But certainly no need to HAMMER pins. Let's have fun. 

Always wanted a true balsa board, but never could see wasting all that good balsa on one. Often wondered how long a big square dart board would last. Buy like 3 and frame them in.
