Here a boatful of modelers are participating in ROW FF contest.

The original painting was inspired by the 1st Annual L. I. Sound Hydro Championship model airplane meet sponsored by Berjekey Models.   The painting was awarded to Bill Effinger, president of Berkeley.

Flying Models  - April 1953

This issue's cover had a scene by Harold illustrating modelers flying towline FF gliders.

A few years ago when we posted this cover art we had the good fortune of receiving some email from Meryl Ann Butler who had studied art under Harold.  This is her comment on this cover: Quote:
"I only saw a few of Harold's magazine covers when I was in art school there, so I was delighted  to see them here. The fellow in the green and yellow plaid shirt in the April 1953 cover is most surely a self porrtrait."

Flying Models would sometimes mat Harold's original artwork and present to leaders in the model aviation industry.  The original of the Feb 1953 was awarded to Charles Brebeck of the Herkimer Tool and Model Works which produce the OK model engines.

Flying Models  - February 1953

One of my favorite covers.  In this imaginative and brightly colored piece, Howard places a modeler working on his CL speed model in front of a background of jet pilot in his cockpit.  I wonder how many of us modelers had similar dreams while working on our models.  In our case, modeling guided me to an unsuccessful attempt for the USAF aviation cadet program.  This did not prevent us from enlisting into the USAF as an airman.  From this we were able to move thru a succession of aviation jobs for the better part of 50 years that provided me with a lifetime of remarkable experiances and the fellowship of a great group of gals and guys that containues to this day.

AT article written by james L. H. Peck  and illustrated  by Harold  giving a simple explanation of the SAGE air defense system.  More on SAGE at:

Another of the complexities that belied the apparent simplicity of the '50s.
