Here is a shot of Herb Kothe winding a WW2 model. He has his blast tube in the model, and the rubber is hooked on to a wire rod that has a torque meter built in. Once he winds to the proper torque, he will slide the blast tube out of the model, and onto the rod, then hook up the prop.
This was taken at an FAC Mass Launch, so he has a helper instead of a winding stooge.

When done, (and it may take a little fussy cutting to get it right), just slide in your blast tube, and rotate it to lock it in place.
You do need to make a wire hook long enough to slide the blast tube onto once you are done winding. It hangs on the stooge when not in use. I usually put a handle on mine. Note: many modelers use a rod that has a loop on the winder end, and just wind the motor with the long wire between the motor and winder.
This explanation may not be clear, so I will post a picture to explain it better.

The end of the tubing is slotted to fit over the anchor tubing. Put a new blade in your exacto blade to make sure you don't cut yourself. The tubing I posted earlier is soft enough to easily cut.
Once you cut the slot, carve notches at their ends so the blast tube stays put when you wind the motor.
I just use a sharpie pen to mark the cut areas, and carve away the black parts.

This tube is from my (sound of weeping), OOS Debut embryo. I will cut off the end to fit the Bad Axe. You can carefully heat the end of the tubing with a heat gun, and mash an old golf ball into the end to flare it out.
As you can see, it fits the model all the way to the tubing where the rubber anchors. You may have a model that you would want to check this dimension on the plan prior to building to insure that your blast tube fits.

I'll post a picture that should help. You may have to add a little width/depth back at the motor peg area so that a blast tube will fit.
I blew up several airplanes before I started using blast tubes. It's a really good idea.

Dohrmc, I just noticed your Bad Axe build. Nice square fuselage and really clean also, I am interested to see your use of those blast tubes. I personally have never used or seen how to use them, but would be interested to learn.

A little progress, except for the extras need to make it a pop off wing.
So far, so good.
2 grams, which is fine.  I have high hopes for this one.

It is a simple plane, and an excellent plan, so it will be a piece of cake.
It will have a little extra lumber in the wing center section to hold the pop off wing DT. I think it will need it.

I have the short kit, yet to be built. Am interested in how the build goes, and how well she does in the contests. Good luck!

This is the excellent kit put out by George Bredehoft. (He won the Nats this summer with this design).
I need to move fast as we only have two contests left this year. I will make the gear removeable, and it will have a pop off wing DT.
This is a nice short kit by George, good wood, and a very nice plan. You should get one.
Can't wait to see it waaaaaay up there.
