Need to finish yet is the mainwheels/landing gear, prop, exhaust, and cabanes. Painted the model a lighter green than it should be. I didn't want the model to look drab looking.

Wire insulation.  Check a hardware store for different colors and diameters.  Remove from the wire by slitting down the middle. Then put the slit over the cockpit edge.

Really like your idea, ran down stairs to find a couple old wiring harnesses I salvaged from a washer/dryer I tossed. Originally pulled them out because, there was all different guages and colors. No tan that I was hoping for, but there is kind on a medium mustard color. And it is more to scale than the feul tubing would have been. After thinking about it a bit. I'll use black for the inst panel bulkhead. Then a light tan for the interior, just so it's not just a black hole. And use the mustard wire for the combing. It is kind of a leather color, which I think that original combing was. Think I need to see what Park Flyer Plastics has in the way of a pilot, or maybe just start to paint mine and see what I end up with. I think a pilot in here will really add to it.

SE5a looks great.  Some have used sheet foam to make the cockpit combing.  Depron or foam sheet, Walmart has a 2mm cocoa brown that might work: Click Here
Looking forward to the completion of this one!

I think the headrest fairing I'm going to just make out of solid balsa. Need to paint the cockpit black, or maybe tan? Put the inst panel in, and cut the card stock for the cockpit opening. Might put some old 1/8" feul tubing around the opening for combing, and the paint it tan. I doubt the latex craft paint is going to want to stick to that. Any ideas out there for a tan colored combing to use around the opening? Not sure about putting the pilot in, the one in the kit is pretty poor. I think Pap is going to be proud. I hope he is, it only took me 46 years.

Getting there. Need to repair the radiator/cowl that I cut in half and chopped a hole in for an engine yet. Unsure about installing cabanes, at this time the wings are still removable. The bottom wing screws into the fuselage, and there are screws at the end of each wing strut. After painting it, I don't know why I need to remove the wings though. Maybe I'll cut some from popsicle sticks, and just glue them in place.

My main concern with making it a teather flyer is. If i need to attach to the wing struts midway between the wings, to get this to sit right in the sky. I can't see that upper wing staying attached very long. And because of the story of this plane, I would really like to keep it. I guess in hindsight, I should have put this in the (wrecks, repairs) section.

When I really got into this, I decided to keep as much of the original airplane as possible. So decisions were made to let things go as is. 100% of the incorrectly built vert stab and tailwheel are going to be kept. 95% of the fuselage is going to be kept as is. I would really like to put the exhaust stacks on it. And that wood prop that was in the box also. Also the gun and the pilot. With all this being said, I don't know how much of a goal I have to make it a teather flyer anymore. Sorry?

Rebuilt the entire bottom wing. I guess when I originally started this, I started with the bottom wing. It needed allot of help. 0% of it is original.

Repaired the upper wing. 60% of it is original. That disaster above it is the lower wing.

Already had the horo stab repaired at this point. Thought I'd put this center section in it to make it easier to glue and cover. 90% of it is original.

As Bob suggested the steam to flatten out the decals and immediately pin them down flat.  A damp clothe might clean them up sufficiently to reseal them with a coat of Krylon crystal clear.  But they would still be very fragile.

But the copy idea of Bob's is a good way to set up some tissue cals on your printer.

That pink spinner and prop look to be for glow or diesel power.

1. Use of these decals is questionable.
2. I've put old decals in a bathroom with the hot shower running to make steam that could help with the unroll of the decals.
3. Pin them to a flat surface to dry.
4. Go to Kinkos or a like store to have them print out in color so you could then use to make new decals. Decal sheets are available, but not sure of the sizes.
5. Make tissue cals with the new color markings to use as a template.
