Well, the hangar has a little more room in it.  The Utility Special and Super Fike flew away at the Texas Cloud Climbers' Fall Annual meet in Hamilton TX 18-19 September.  The Utility Special got caught in a breezy thermal Saturday afternoon and drifted south out of sight after about 5-6 minutes.  Sunday the Super Fike got caught in a big thermal and drifted overhead for more than 15 minutes before disappearing against the scattered puffy clouds.

Finished off another scale build yesterday.  P-47 Razorback from an original 1940s Model Craft kit.  19.5" span, weighs about 34g without rubber.  Built this one as part of the Vintage Open Kits group build on RCGroups, build thread at:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3827819-VOK-2021-Model-Craft-P-47...

Structure used the kit wood, with additional infill and assorted detail bits.  Carved prop with way too much gingerbread added to it.  Printed tissue finish representing Capt Charles Mohrle's "Touch of Texas from the 510th Fighter Sqadron, using a fantastic flight sim skin found here:
https://www.lockonfiles.com/files/category/756-p-47d-22-razorback-skins/

Hope to get this one in the air in early August.

Took a quick break from scale building last month and put together Jim Longstreth's Super Fike, a Bostonian/Embryo sport model featured in the Dec 1995 issue of Flying Models.  Covered it with silver and chalked yellow Esaki tissue, accented with trim and lettering cut from black Esaki and some printed insignia, nose and tail numbers.  Scheme was inspired by the USAF Air-Sea Rescue L-5s from the late 1940s.

There's a short build thread for it in the Embryo board here on Stick and Tissue.

Didn't worry too much about weight during the build - covered and balanced the airframe with carved prop weighs 18.5g.  With a 6.8g motor (1 each 30" loop 1/16" + 3/32" rubber) flying weight is just over 25g.  First flights went well, approaching 1 minute on about 50% turns (1080 turns).  Calvin had fun...

Video at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98uTaI1vbBs

Will fly it competitively in FAC Embryo at the Summer Standoff meet in Hamilton, TX the end of June.

Had a good flying session this Saturday - the SBD and FW-190 are pretty well trimmed out.  Might do a bit more work on the FW to open up the turn under power, but I'm quite satisfied with the flights given how heavy the model is.

Thanks guys - just having a bit of fun.  I finally got around to editing up some flight footage of the SBD:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1FR7Lgw0sg
It's a butterfly - I think it needs a bit more noseweight to settle it out.

I also took it and the Miles out for a bit of fun after the recent winter weather:

Short hand-wound flights at the local retention pond, but they look fine in the bright clear sky, uplit by the snow.

Working on a Model Craft P-47 now.

Yeh, you "tweaked it" all right...right outta this world!  Again...that is beautiful...sweet.  I love the armored cowl ring.  Wink  All you need is a Russian forest to leave it sitting in for the next seventy-odd years...the real deal!  You need to publish a book...something to let the rest of the world (or at least me) learn how to finish a model properly!  Smiley

She's lovely, Mike...handsome...a knockout.

A little nostalgic fun.  The Guillows #502 FW-190 was the first stick and tissue model I built, back in the mid-70s as a kid.  During our December flying session a gentleman that works at our new flying field gave me one with the fuselage built - he felt the sticks were too small for him to enjoy building the rest of it.  I started on it the day after Christmas and truly enjoyed the build - used the kit wood, tweaked things where I felt like it and didn't worry too much about what it'd weigh or whether it'd be competitive.  I printed flight simulator graphics on the kit tissue and experimented with chalking the back of that with white PanPastel - I think it gave a much better look than what I got from raw printed tissue on my Tempest.  I even found the cowl blisters from my original 1970s build (I'm such a pathetic pack-rat) and used them on the model.

It's quite portly at 32g without motor.  Saturday I loaded 8g (2x24" loops 1/8") of rubber into it and took it out to play - was pleasantly surprised with how it flew despite being shall we say kind of dense.  Still needs more trimming but let's just say it looks and flies a bit better than the one I built back in the 20th century...

Video at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGOCGsrtR34

I flew the SBD Saturday as well, haven't edited up the video yet.  It's very light and flies well.  Trimming is a work in progress - I think the cg is just a little too far back as it wanders left and right at the mercy of the slightest upset.

Thanks guys - I had a a great time building it and the "Yellow Wings" colors make me smile.  Like most Dime Scale kits it has some scale compromises (fuselage is a bit tubby, canopy is too low and too wide, fin is oversized and the LE doesn't have the right taper in the center section) but it's recognizably a Dauntless and has some character to it.  I resisted the temptation to "fix" things and built it pretty much as it is.

Saturday's weather looks promising - hope to get out and wind it up a bit.

Truly a beautiful build but as we all know, this is how they all turn out for you but Neal is right, this airplane has never been done this well.

I concur with Neal on your Dauntless, Mike. You've done a masterful job in all respects. I like the SBD with its porky frame. Always reminded me of a bulldog on the playground. I've a copy of the recent remake of Midway. Sadly wanting for actors but I watch for the CGI renditions. Again, wonderful craftsmanship.
Thanks for the well wishes. This stuff is all they say it is. It certainly doesn't make a good house guest.

Ahhhhhh Mike, that is absolutely stunning!  No Whitman SBD ever looked that nice...of that I'm certain! Just beautiful!  And I love the "teak-wood flight deck" in the last two pics.  Wink A real winner!  Smiley
