Built this Ryan Navion in Nov-Dec 2017.  Comet design, built from a Diels Engineering reproduction kit.  It came out light and flies very well.  All tissue finish, insignia and tail numbers printed on tissue then applied to the model.

Figured I should add the Tigercat to the hangar.  1/24th scale from the Diels Engineering kit (25.5" span).  Finish is all tissue; silver, red and chalked white esaki with black trim cut from domestic tissue.  There is a long and tedious build thread here on Stick and Tissue.

Flew it basically untrimmed in the Double Trouble mass launch at WESTFAC VI, made it to the second round: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6pJJ5I_Rho&t=24s.  WESTFAC pictures below are from the WESTFAC site.

Still trimming it out, best flight so far is 33 seconds:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1IuhPLISrU

Latest completion - peanut scale Miller "Little Gem", 1964 Reno winner.  This is from the Shorty's Basement short kit of "'Ole Tiger" (Bob Downey bought "Little Gem" after the 1964 season and raced it as "Ole Tiger" into the mid 1970s).

Heavy for a peanut at just over 20g, but it's got a big wing so wing loading looks pretty good at ~.4g/sq in.

Once the wind drops down here I'll start trimming and see how she flies.

Thanks!  It was a fun build, and I'm looking forward to flying it at WestFAC this fall.  Should be able to put a bit more rubber in it and let it really cover some ground.

Bob,  thanks - the Waco is the best-looking model I've ever made.

The navy plane is Douglas Skyshark, rather than a Ryan Dark Shark.  Same era, different plane.  Maybe I need to do a Dark Shark too!

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Huey, just posted an answer to this in the intro forum.  Did you ever get to fly the original Zippy?

Hi Mike. Was wondering how the Zippy did. My friend Ed Fisher designed the original Zippy, which flew hands off on first flight. Nice to see a model of it.

In the middle of the Waco build I needed a distraction.  Someone on HPA mentioned wanting to build a Douglas A2D Skyshark.  I had an old Airlane 50-cent sheet kit I'd picked up on ebay.  I posted the plan and scans of the die-cut sheet parts, then someone volunteered to turn the scans into a CAD part file.  I built the plane in a week to verify the part files.  Surprisingly, it flies really well!

Spring 2017 build is this Earl Stahl Waco SRE from a Bob Holman short kit.  My flying buddy here in San Antonio passed the kit along to me and told me to "do it justice".  I experimented with contest weight wood and inkjet-printed tissue on this one.  Still trimming it up, but it really likes to fly, so much so that I'm a bit scared to push duration on our small flying field.  I'm just about comfortable enough with the way it's flying to add the flying wires and small details.

Last fall's big project was a West Wings Tempest Mk V for FAC WWII mass launch.  This turned out heavy and was a bit of a bear to trim, but thanks to many suggestions and much encouragement from folks on the HPA forum and FAC members it has turned out to be a decent flyer.  Took 3rd (out of 4) in WWII ML at Gainesville TX last October and 2nd (out of 3, in very windy conditions) at Gainesville this spring.

Did a couple of JetCats - Bill Dean F4D Skyray and my own Supermarine Scimitar.  The Skyray is a very fun, very consistent flyer, but not competitive (takes a minor miracle to get more than 15 seconds).  My son loves it.

The Scimitar is a lot of fun and has done over 25 seconds, but it seems to warp when left in the sun.  Early morning flights are great, come back to it a few hours later and it just wants to spiral in.  Still sorting this out.  The swallows at our field are very nervous about this one - groups of them chase it every flight.

First post-retirement build was a Sterling Citabria - reliving my youth.  I experimented with splicing tissue and printing markings on bond paper for this one.  Turned out pretty and light (under 10g with motor), but I'm still trying to get consistent performance out of it.  Best flights so far are around 30-35 seconds.  3/32 rubber is a bit too much, 1/16" rubber is not quite enough...
