Art Deco at its finest, Mike...Utility Flyer is truly a work of art!  More than that...it's your craftsmanship this does it justice. When Rembrandt puts brush to canvas...well, we've come to expect this from you, Mike.  Beautiful.  Smiley

After the Miles I spent August and September building Frank Zaic's "Utility Special" from the May 1937 Popular Science magazine.  The plan and article are available on Outerzone at: https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=1819

Some interesting construction on this one, with bulkheads laminated of 1/64" balsa sheet, more 1/64" sheet over the nose and tail, and a wing where the center section has to be partially assembled then slid through the fuselage and competed before adding the outer panels.

I made two props for it, one from the layout on the plan and another with narrower blades and higher pitch - it'll be interesting to see which flies better.  The noseblock has a Gizmo Geezer nose button and a Mulholland-style freewheeler embedded between the thrust ring and the spinner.

Finish is silver and chalked white Esaki, with black Esaki and red Mt. Fuji tissue trim.  The only printed items are the American flags on the forward fuselage.  Scheme was inspired by the TWA SuperConnies - seemed a natural fit for the streamlined fuselage and twin tails.

Hope to get a chance to fly it this weekend.

July 2020 build - a Dime Scale Miles Sparrowhawk from a Mystic Models plan published in Flying Aces Newsletter #180.  16" span, covered in silver Esaki with tissue trim.  Kinda wild the first day out as the C.G. was just a bit too far aft, but showing a lot of potential - did manage to break a minute in the first session with the help of a nice mid-morning thermal.  Moved the cg forward about 1/8" for the next day out and some test flights on hand winds looked a lot better.  There's a short build thread for it in the dime scale section here on S&T.

Update:  Build and flight video posted at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v071qtSKtUk.

Been a while since I've done a peanut.  Over on HipPocket the Brits started a Walt Mooney cookup to pass the isolation time this spring - it took off rapidly and ended up with over 95 entries and as of mid-June 49 models completed.  I've been eyeing Walt's Keleher Lark peanut for several years and made that my entry.  This is an interesting build with lots of very thin sheeting.  Midway through the woodwork I got in contact with the owner of the plane I'd decided to model - he graciously sent photos and information that let me really dive into the details.  I also used this build to make my first try at a 3D pilot.  Had a great time and very pleased with how it came out.  It's a little portly at 11.6g without rubber.  Now waiting for the daily breezes to calm down enough to start flight trimming.

I've admired Mike Nassise's dime- and simplified-scale plans a lot, but hadn't built one.  In the March-April 2019 "Tailspin" newsletter Mike published a 22" span simplified scale Max-Holste MH-1521 Broussard that really caught my eye.  A quick web search found a beautiful blue-yellow Aeronavale scheme on a French-registered Broussard.  Mike passed away last November.  When the COIN/Liason theme was selected for the Stick and Tissue Winter 2019-2020 cookup I knew what to build...  I modified the fuselage a bit to capture the rounded corners and belly of the full-scale aircraft, and used the build to practice techniques for adding small details such as steps, handholds, control surface hinges etc.  Finish is chalked Esaki tissue.  Lettering is cut from lightweight printer paper, the markings are printed on white Esaki lightly sprayed on the back side with Design Master white floral paint.

22" span, finished out at 24.3g (without motor) including all the gingerbread.  Initial flights on 2x22" loops of 3/32" rubber were nice and floaty - video at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eVgJu8Au4o

Glad to see she made it back to the hanger, after watching the video it's easy to see she's a real flyer!  Congrats on a fantastic build and successful maiden flights!! Smiley

Felt fired up and motivated after WestFAC.  Completed a quick two-week build of a sport model I've wanted to do since seeing it in Flying Models 25 years ago - Jim Longstreth's Windindicator Bostonian.  FAC Embryo rules are similar to Bostonian, and the Windindicator is Embryo-compliant, giving me the chance to fly in another event at FAC meets.

Longstreth's designs have a quirky charm, and each of his articles had an entertaining fictional backstory for the airplane.

The build went together quick and came out clean and straight.  I printed a Canadian SAR scheme on some yellow tissue scavenged from a Herr Cub kit.  Very pleased with how this one looks, and even more pleased with how it flies - video at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dzhVmsinMM&feature=youtu.be

This is  the first non-scale rubber model I've built since I came back to the hobby.  It won't be the last...

I put together a video with some of the events at WestFAC - what a great time!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ih2AIg1Olg

The carrier-launched jetcat event was a lot of fun, unfortunately I was so busy trying to get in flights that I neglected to film any of it!  Tom Arnold and Rich Adams coaxed some truly amazing flights out of their jetcats.  Hope this event is held again.

If you're anywhere near Phoenix AZ when the next WestFAC is held you really should go - great field, great weather and great people.

Cheers,

Mike
