Pfalz Dr.I WWI German single seat Triplane Fighter 21" laser cut, Scale 1:16 Weight 58 grams.  DPCModels (www.dpcmodels.homestead.com) AW (Aero-Werke) kit 11607 $30.00 completed Sept 2, 2015.  Powerplant - 11 cylinder air-cooled Siemens Halske SHIII geared rotary engine 160 hp, top speed - 118 mph.  Year introduced - April 1918 - only 10 planes made it to the front, then the war ended, and it lapsed into obscurity, but a very beautiful plane nonetheless.  Armament - two Maschinegewehr Lmg 08/15 Spandau Machine guns 7.92 mm.  The Fuselage was well rounded and quite streamlined.  This is a really great kit.   My first fuselage girder frame construction kit. It has a parts ID sheet - no printing on the parts, which is how I like it - no sanding.
I cut out and made my own decals out of gloss "Black" and outlined with "Aluminum" adhesive backed (peel 'n stick) "Trim Sheets" from Top Flite - sheets are 5" X 36". They are 9.5 thou thick, of which the backing peel is 6.0 thou, leaving a 3.5 thou thick decal to stick on. I cut out paper templates of the wing and fuse sections, inked on marks to lline up with ribs and formers, cut out the holes in the paper template a little larger than tha actual decal size, and then used masking tape to hold the paper template on the wing and fuse, for perfect positioning of the decal.

WACO "N" - 25" I made a slip-fit removable main landing gear, as I intended to fly it (rubber powered).   On the first test glide, all balanced, it glided perfectly into the fairly long soft grass.  As it landed, I heard that loud, sharp, cracking "snap",   Shocked   and my heart sank. The nose gear strut had ripped a chunk of balsa right out of the balsa mounting plank for the nose gear, where it was glued with CA.  I talked to Dave Niedzielski of "Easy Built Models" about it, and he said "Been there, done that. The boys use a spring loaded nose gear strut". I glued it back on and it is a "display" only model now, until I install a spring loaded nose gear strut.

The color scheme of my "PURPLE WACO", was Violet (upper wings, upper stabilser, and fin/rudder), Cream - a pale tint of Yellow (underside of wings, stab, and fuse), and Lilac - a pale tint of violet (fuselage). The nose cowl and spinner were sprayed gloss "grape".
The spinner came from a "plastic decorative end" of a "Curtain Rod Bracket Set" from Dollarama and weighs 5.0 grams. The side fuse decals were my own design and were made from different colors of Top Flite "Trim Sheets" (Peel 'n Stick).
A famous quote saying, that I read about this plane, that really got to me and left me pondering ... goes as follows "AFTER THE LAST WACO GRACEFULLY FLIES, THE SKY WILL BECOME MERELY AIR."

WACO "N" Golden Age Sesquiplane, Easy Built laser cut kit #PD05, $35, 25" wing span, scale 1:19, completed March 10, 2015, weight 54 grams.  This is the "N" series Cabin Plane, with a fixed tricycle landing gear of "nosewheel" type. This "Golden Age" "sequiplane" is a common variation of a biplane, where the lower wing has not more than 1/2 the surface of the top wing - also called one and one-half wings ( 1 1/2 wings).
WACO stands for Weaver Aircraft Company (1919 to 1947), W.A.Co. (WACO - Wah - co , the first syllable pronounced as in wa-ter), one of the founders of the company was barnstorming pilot George E. Weaver. WACO made these closed-in cabin biplanes after 1930 and over the lifetime of the company, made over 80 different models, then ceasing production in 1947.  The "N" series was produced in 1937 - 1938, and was powered by a Jacobs L-6 air-cooled, 9 cylinder, radial engine, 300 hp, 161 mph. They were reliable, rugged planes.

Guillow 16" diecut German "Focke Wulf" FW-190 "Wurger" (Shrike {type of bird} in English) nicknamed the "Butcherbird".  This is why they call it the "Butcher Bird" - it impales its prey on thorns to be eaten later.  Single seat fighter/intercepter. Scale 1:25 - - 45 grams July 24, 2014.  One of the most beautifully proportioned fighters of WW2.  Outflew the Spitfire 5 for two years in almost every category except turns..  The introduction of the Spitfire MK IX in July 1942 restored parity.  The pride of Air Marshal Herman Goering.

She's a beauty...reminds me of the Teak wood models from the Philippines.  I like the looks very much.  Very nice and meticulous work on the infilling!!! Smiley

THE 16" WINGSPAN Guillow DIE-CUT NAKAJIMA A6M2-N "RUFE" KIT #507 SCALE 1:29.5 NAVY INTERCEPTER / FIGHTER-BOMBER 77 GRAMS    JAP ZERO FLOATFIGHTER
Built with "infill planking" (NO filler was used), 1/32" wing sheeting, and wood staining using "golden oak", "provincial', and "American walnut" stains.  It has a hand carved, three blade, laminated prop, with acrylic "cinnamon" painted between the lamination layers (10 layers of 1/32" balsa), for wood grain appearance, and then stained golden oak.
The infill planking was a very labor-intensive, painstaking, and arduous task, as all of the planks had to be fitted perfectly, because I thought that "body filler" would not take the stain.  All of the infill planking was done with the "double white gluing" procedure.

Thanks Pete - the turnbuckles were hard to make - at least the aluminum tubing cuts easier than brass tubing with my K&S tubing cutter - I had to chase all of the holes with a drill bit, and use a jeweler's file to remove burrs, and file a radius on the ends of each turnbuckle.
The Pfalz D3 always seems to make it into the top ten most beautiful planes of all time ...

Very, very, VERY NICE!

Just for info, there are sub mini turnbuckles available.  I'll try to find out where.

Thanks Neal - I am biased towards biplanes, triplanes, and early pioneer planes.   The Mercedes engine is not to scale, but it is shiny!   Grin  Thank God for micro drill bits and a Pin Vise !  Roll Eyes
