Tom - then why does it say this  "These pictures are from Gary's Archive. Thanks Gary for sharing these historic pictures with us!" ??
It seems like this is Gary's board. Maybe we could include everyone in the description?

Richard,
This section is not just for Gary's archives.  It for anyone who has done some research on a famous aviator or famous person associated with aviation, such as a designer, company owner, etc.

Thanks for the further info on the Schneider Trophy and Schneider himself!

The Schneider Races did not achieve his intended objective of furthering and encouraging commercial aviation, but instead, became an object of INTENSE National competition, with Seaplane designs built only to win the trophy, and little use for other purposes.
The enduring result of the Schneider Cup Races, was, that 20 years of A/C research were compressed into only six years.
In the end, the Schneider Arms business was driven into Bankruptcy after World War One, and Schneider was forced into poverty, and he died in 1928 at only 49 years of age.

The winged figurine has two pairs of wings in the shape of a dragonfly's wings, but the wings are feathered.
The breaking wave also holds the heads of two other Zephyrs, AND ,  the BEARDED HEAD OF NEPTUNE,  the God of the Sea.
All of this is surrounded by Octopii and Crabs situated around the upper sides of the marble base.
There are four ringed bronze "handles" figure ornaments around the green marble base (I cannot make out the figure - a lion's head? anyone know?).
The symbolism represents speed, and the conquering of the elements of sea and air.

The Schneider sculpture atop the marble base is not a cup, but a trophy, depicting ancient figures from Greek and Roman Mythology.
It is a sculpture of silver and bronze set on a marble base.  It depicts a Zephyr  ( Zephyrus was the Greek God of the West Wind ),  coming out of the wave.  A flying, nude female, winged figurine is seen dissing a Zephyr recumbent (laid back in a reclining position), on a breaking wave.

So then in 1912, Schneider proposed an annual contest for sea planes - the "Coupe d'Aviation Maritime Jacques Schneider".  The first inaugural competition was held in 1913 in the Mediterranean Sea off of Monaco, where they had to fly a course over 150 miles.
He paid for, and built, the Schneider Trophy for the winner.  The Trophy was worth just as much as the prize money, which was  25,000  gold Francs.  In 1913,   25,000  gold Francs equates to  $270,850  worth of gold in 2015 (relative worth).

Jacques Schneider had a taste for adventure, racing hydroplane boats, ballooning, and piloting early airplanes, but was forced to abandon flying himself after a severe accident.
His interest in powered, heavier than air, flights of aircraft, started when he saw Wilbur Wright fly in LeMans in 1908.
He originally thought that Seaplanes had a great future, without the need to build railways.

Jacques' Grandfather was Adolphe Schneider (1802 - 1845 died from a fall from a horse), who, with younger brother Joseph Eugene (1805 - 1875), together in 1836, bought iron ore mines and forges around Le Creusot, France.  In 1838, they built the first French Locomotive.  the giant Creusot Steam Hammer (a forge), built in 1877, was capable of a blow of up to 100 tons - the most powerful in the world until 1891.  These steam forges were eventually made redundant by hydraulic and mechanical steel presses.  Schneider-Creusot, or Schneider et Cie, was a historic French iron and steel-mill which became a major arms manufacturer. After World War II, it evolved into Schneider Electric.

But first, we must look to the man behind the Schneider Trophy - Jacques P. Schneider (1879 - 1928), who died at the age of 49.
Schneider was a French financier, a balloonist pilot, and an early aircraft enthusiast and pilot.  He was trained as an Engineer, and was the wealthy heir to an industrial empire, based on metallurgy and armament manufacturing, which had prospered with the development of railways, iron ships, and modern weapons, such as machine guns, tanks, and artillery.

This Trophy has one of the most captivating, and interesting, and intriguing sculptures of all time, when one actually looks at it, and studies it.  Closer examination draws one to understanding and interpreting the compelling symbolism, and intent, and meaning, of the various facets of this work of art.

There is a tremendous amount of unparalleled prestige associated with winning the SCHNEIDER TROPHY (or SCHNEIDER PRIZE), properly called the "Coupe d' Aviation Maritime Jacques Schneider".  That prestige is amplified, when one takes a careful, closer look, at the silver and bronze sculpture that adorns the crown of the marble base.

This topic is dedicated to all of the extremely talented, skilled modellers, and their fantastic renditions of the various racing seaplanes, who participated in the Schneider Trophy Cookup.
(If only I could find one of those plastic Schneider Trophy ashtrays for a prize for the winner of the cookup!)  WELL DONE EVERYONE !! Smiley
