What follows is Hugh Langhans' report on the FAC contest from the FAC page in the Black Sheep Exhibition Squadron newsletter:

The much postponed contest for Wade Wiley's Basin Flier, Dime Scale and Golden Age was attempted on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at the Grassy Knoll. There were five entries in the Basin Flier event, and there would have been six except for the fact that the designer, Wade Wiley, arrived just after the contest concluded. Ron Boots won the event which was held as a mass launch. The entries were Ron Boots, Don smith, Hugh Langhans, Bill Walton and Pat Alling.

There were not enough entries for Dime Scale and Golden Age. Hugh Langhan's Earl Stahl Stinson 125 was not there because the left wing disappeared in the garage somehow. Perhaps it got blown away by the wind? If the Stinson had flown, we would have had an event.

After the Basin Flier Mass, there was a lot of fun flying. It was a great day with almost no wind and a pleasant temperature. Jim Alling flew a CO2 powered Grumman Hellcat and a duration model. Howard Littman flew his scale Cutlass pusher and other models. Don Smith flew some high wing scale models.

The next scheduled FAC  contest at the grassy knoll will be May 13. (Yes, I know it is Mother's day!) It will be Thompson/Greve trophy, WWII fighters and Earl Stahl memorial. All these will be mass launch events. If there are enough Basin Flyers present, we will compete with those also.

When I got up this morning there was just a hint of a breeze.  By the time I got to the other side of the 405, and I saw the palm trees swaying, it was obvious that no one was going to be flying anything but kites.  Or to put it simply, the contest got blown out!  The weather report, last night, did call for winds today.

The club officers had a field side conference in the breeze and decided to attempt it next weekend.

More later.

Yes, the nickname is unfortunate, but it is an apt description.  It's just enough of a knoll that it's (so far) too expensive for the Parks Department to grade to install more soccer fields.

Contest, FAC 69, Van Nuys, CA ,DATE CHANGE

Because current weather reports indicate that the Sepulveda Basin will be rained out for the next two weekends and Easter week is coming up the date of the contest has been changed to APRIL 08.

The events are: Wade Wiley's Basin Flyer, Golden Age Civil and Dime scale. The  newest FAC rules book does not have Golden Age Civil listed under that description, but does have Golden Age Monoplane which is civil monoplanes from 1920-1945   and military high wing cabin aircraft from 1920 to 1945 and low wing military monoplanes from 1920 to 1939. Golden age multi wing is civilian from 1920 to 1945 and Military multi wings 1920 to 1939. We will use the FAC  categories so that Kanones can be awarded.

For the Basin Flyer, no Kanone but we may be able to award a Cannoli.

Grassy Knoll Flying Club (FAC 69)

The local chapter of the FAC is having our next contest on Sunday, March 11, 2018.  This will be at the grassy knoll next to the golf course, as before, off Woodley Avenue in the Sepulveda Dam recreation area. From Woodley Avenue, turn west on the road next to the National Guard facility, and proceed until you see model airplane activity. If you get to Lake Balboa, turn around and keep looking. We will fly from about 9:00AM to when we finish or get blown out by the wind.

The events are: Golden Age Civil, Dime Scale, and the Basin Flyer by Wade Wiley. The first two are fairly well known to FAC folks, but the third is an original design by Wade Wiley for easy construction. It has a 22" wing span and uses a plastic 5" prop. There is a reduced size plan in the January Black Sheep newsletter, but it can be enlarged at a copy shop by about 114% to be full size.
( Note from Howard:  Greatly reduced plan attached.  PM for  the published one.  Haven't yet got permission to post in plan gallery.)

The Golden Age Civil may be a Multi-Wing or high wing cabin. The original full size must have been made between 1920 and 1945.

Dime scale is 16" wingspan models either from the golden age of modeling, or modern Pseudo-dimers that honor the methods of the period dime scale models. However, plastic props are allowed.
