I use both a magnet board and a 4'X2' celotex ceiling tile on a 3/4" Ply 2'X4' flat board base.  I made the magnet board from a 2'X4' galvanized sheet on another 3/4" ply base.  I still use the stick pin board for the larger models and enjoy the magnet board for the smaller builds.  I'm thinking of making a semi vertical building board as "Crabby" uses on HPA  I got his setup there and it takes up less space and eases the leaning over the board stress on the back.  Plus it will maximise my small work area.

I still use pins and am always looking for a better building board.

One idea that has worked well for me is to use small individual boards instead of only thinking of one large board. I use a piece of purple insulation foam (from Lowes) and make sure it's flat. Then I pin or glue a piece of 1'4" balsa sheet to it. Most of my models are in the 13"-21" wingspan area so I'll make one long but relatively narrow board to fit the wing or fuselage and a smaller but more square board for the tail pieces. The small size makes it easy to move the board around for the desired building orientation.

I use a self sealing mat for cutting, stripping, etc.

I used to work for Raytheon and my cube was near one of the compost guys cube.  He had a big box in the aisle one day and I looked inside and there was some 1/2" thick end grain balsa that he had gotten as a sample.  I asked him what he was going to do with it and he said throw it away.  I ended up with it and after gluing it to a piece of compost cabinet wood to keep it flat it has worked out just great. You can sometimes find end grain balsa on e bay but I think the shipping might be high.

And here is the info I wanted to pass along about magnetic boards:

I went with a magnetic building board long ago and never looked back.  I would never use pins again.

Here is a post on RCGroups describing mine:  https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=26309175&postcount=11

I have posted some magnetic board fixtures and tools on Thingiverse if you have, or have access to, a 3D printer:  https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2540801

And here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2540725

Followed by number 2.  I imagine there is some point other than aggravation to this.

Um, i tried posting some links and, for some strange reason, have to have 2 other posts prior to doing so.

OK, here's number 1.

Good and bad with the building board from the UK.

Forget getting one from them.

The shipping rate they gave me was way off the scope.

Did learn something from looking at their description

They said it is made with 'endgrain' pieces.

I think that is why building boards are better than just using a balsa wood board.

Update.

Filled out order info on SLEC UK for building board order.

It would not give me a shipping rate to the US.

Good news is price dropped from 11 and change pounds to 9 and change pounds.

Exchange rate was $1.30 for a pound. So 10 pound cost workboard is $13.

It is small. 300 x 600 millimeters. 100 millimeters is a pack of 100's ciarettes. So 3 x 6 of those.

Good size for whole bunch of Guillows models.

Emailed SLEC sales AGAIN for shipping rate to US.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. Smiley

In the real world probably use cardboard and new grip pins.

That's just to keep things moving.

Place in UK has not responded to email about shipping cost.

The do not have a 'Estimate Shipping' routine. You have to fill in a bunch of info to get to shipping rate.

Good tip about double cardboard! Smiley

I made up a board from two layers of corrugated cardboard (double corrugation) some ten years ago.  Used white glue (PONAL - similar to Elmer's) and weighted down to dry with books.

Still in good shape and FLAT (many pin holes NOT taken into account Roll Eyes).  The glue layers act as a stabilizer.

Cardboard was recycled from parcel deliveries Smiley.

Best of all - it is essentially FREE!

The idea is to have a place to "clamp" pieces together by using pins to press parts together while they dry. By doubling the thickness of the foam board, you have a deeper holder for the pins, so they hold better.
Do not try to cut anything on one of these boards. Cut on a wooden board, or self-healing mat.

Great suggestions. Smiley

Have some of that cardboard backed foam.

I think it is sold as 'Art board' if anybody else wants to try it too.

Is the idea just to hold things in place over plan patterns while glue dries?

I use a flat pine board and glue 2 layers of cardboard-backed foam onto it. I get my foam from the dollar store. It takes pins well and is great for small models.
