Here is a link to a 3-view I did for a book about German born Edgar Schmued, considered to be the designer of the Mustang:

I see you are using A.A.P. Lloyds Mustang drawings. IIRC these are from Model Allied Press and appeared in Scale Models magazine back in the mid 70's.

Have to applaud your project, as I'm an old Mustang nerd.  I built a 60% scale, and I believe very accurateP-51D (from NAA engineering drawings) model for a large Southern (USA) air museum and flyers group, but they lost interest. I kept it in storage for 10 yrs. and it's now owned by EAA.  They picked it up 2019, just before Covid hit. I don't know its current status or if they intend to display it. I'll try to post photos.

That looks like a lot of work. But the results are fantastic! Really great looking panel lines. Very realistic looking model. Smiley

Skydiamonds,
Hey brother I just ran across this link dealing with a P-51C, I know it's not the same model your building but the pictures were interesting and the plane is being restored in honor of Donald Lopez and she's called "Lope's Hope".  Here's the link: Click Here being restored at AirCorps Aviation for Texas Flying Legends.

Maybe just a little inspiration!

Final result.  It takes lots of patience and knowing how much to rub and where to rub the foil as the wrinkles are being worked out.  This is especially true along the curved portion of the surfaces and even more so along compound curves.

It's going to be a shame to paint over all this nice metal finish, but that's what will happen to the nose as the nose of Big Beautiful Doll has a black and white checkered pattern.

I still went ahead the went through the process of adding panel lines and latch marks anyway.  This is because I know the paint will allow the markings to show through and help give the nose (& Mustang) that additional "bling" of detailing.

The added benefit of the checkered pattern paint will also help cover up some of the imperfections however small or unnoticeable they may be.  Sometimes it's just one of those things that gets away.

Thank you for looking in.

Cheers,

Here are the steps taken to apply the nose portion of the Flite Metal covering.  As you can see, it starts out by simply laying down the piece of foil over the exact area desired.  This is not easy as it looks.  Just the slightest touch of the foil over the surface results in it sticking almost like glue.  The adhesive is that strong.  Like the rest of the covering, it's really a delicate balance of trying the minimize the sticky backing from touching the surfaces as I line up the piece and at the same time, also minimize the sticky tension between the foil and my fingers without pulling my fingers away and creating wrinkles.  I've had to throw away several pieces as the result of either encounters.  This is where practice (usually) pays off.

The first picture shows a few wrinkles from the foil as a result of pulling away my fingers.  This is acceptable and I can rub it out as seen in the second photo during the early stages of rubbing the foil onto the surface.

Here are the results of both the lines and latches.  I tried to follow the outlines and latches as reasonably close to the full size Mustang

Here, I'm using a tool designed originally for plastic models.  It's basically a smaller version of using s brass tube sharpened at the end to make small latch marks.

I've updated this post to illustrate the small latch tool available for plastic modelers.  As you can see, they're quite small. I used their biggest diameter. For this purpose, it serves me very well.
