Now to attempt a dummy Shvetsov M-11. I'm thinking a little nose weight will be OK Smiley

Once again, I depleted my lumber stash and had to wait for SIG to get my stock replenished. I made an abortive attempt at the speed ring a couple weeks ago, but just didn’t have the right balsa on hand.

Three layers of 4lb 1/32” stuff, edge glued into 7” strips and laminated dry with PVA over an old Pactra dope bottle which was exactly the right size for the ID.

After an overnight dry, it was trimmed and shaped over the same bottle as a support jig. Trust me, as hamhanded as I am, this works well!

Outstanding job...I can never get the wing root and fuselage to fit like that.  I'm jealous of your skill.  Well done! Smiley

Fuselage pretty well framed up. It required a lot of tortured balsa and use of the mkI hand clamp, so it was a little slow to build, but it stayed pretty true. With the fuse & wing built as a unit, it needs "tissue attachment points" (really, isn't the whole model a collection of tissue attachment points?) at the wing root area- the ones at the fuselage bottom were cut by Meatbomber and fit perfectly- the ones on the wing were cut to fit.

Well, Russian stuff was sometimes a bit unpolished... We'll call it "scale!"

But I was stupid and didn’t clean up the hub part before glueing the outer parts on, just a heads up

I started mine too with a slightly less demanding part Smiley
Got the wheels made, and quite happy the way they turn out

Another great model...looking forward to seeing the fuselage/cockpit section on that beautiful wing.

Well, it's a wing. I's an interesting thing- it's kind of like it turns upside-down mid-chord. Covering the top side will be like doing the bottom of an under cambered asymmetrical 'foil. The last picture is of the bottom side.

Obligatory picture of laminated tailfeathers drying. Not much of that on this aircraft. 3 laminations of floppy 4# 1/32” stock, stripped .150” wide  to be sanded back to an airfoil shape, 1/8” thick at the fin/rudder line.

Getting close on the wing. Doing some pre/shaping on the wingtips to put the reflex in so as not to overshoot and sand improper contours into the tip ribs.

I hadn't looked at the plan...Walt has you covered with the reflex already built into the wing with those ribs.  Very nicely done and the tabs under the trailing edge really assist with the build.  Great looking job.  I use "T" pins to hold the ribs vertical and you don't have to bend the pin...
