Great progress!  She looks great in the air.  Especially that close pass on the second or third flight!!!

First trimming session on the T-28 was a nightmare - very erratic behavior in the pitch axis, ended up landing hard, popping out the wing and buckling a few stringers aft of the wing joint.  Post-mortem revealed that the stab was at a more positive angle than the wing - no wonder it didn't fly the same way twice.  More carefully measuring wing and stab areas, then re-calculating tail volume and cg showed my initial cg was too far aft.  Set the stab up 1 degree negative WRT the wing and moved the cg about 1/8" forward and took it out this morning to try again.  Things went much better:

Cg could probably stand to go just a bit more forward, but it's looking very nice in the air.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Phillip!  Did some initial trim glides without the prop this morning - looks promising:

Hope to put it up under power tomorrow morning.

Cheers,

Mike

Got to say it again Mike that has to be one-off the best pure tissue finish I’ve ever seen! Thanks for sharing some of your techniques in this thread!

Mike...that's what I thought...but didn't want to ruin anyone else's search!  That is such a masterpiece, I'm with the other fellas in saying I'd be afraid to give her a chuck into the air!!!  Yet, that's what we build em for isn't it?! Smiley

Thanks Pete - it's a T-28A with the smaller 7-cylinder engine and the taller canopy.  I put some nicer pictures and a bit of background on the color scheme in my hangar this morning.  Hope to give it a toss or two Thursday morning (it's calm today but it's also rapidly heating to a record-breaking 105 degrees today - supposed to be somewhat cooler Thursday morning).

Cheers,

Mike

Tom, I swapped sides when putting on the silver tissue for the main gear on the fuselage.  The inner doors should taper in towards the front.  Like you said, I don't think most folks will notice...

Mike...if we have to look this hard to find them...I think you're in good shape!  Unless they're staring at a three view and looking at the model I don't think they'll notice!

Doped it last night, added the pitot tube, colored the lights and dressed up the prop today. Pretty much done with building on this one - only thing left to do is finish the freewheeler and put on the prop.  WX looks promising to fly on Wednesday or Thursday this coming week.

Thanks Craig!  Bonus points to the first person to identify the items I screwed up and put on backwards.

Alright, I might have gone over the edge with this build.  Spent an enjoyable afternoon catching up on the British Grand Prix and putting anti-static wicks, rudder trim tab actuator, flap hinges, landing and position lights on the T-28.  Another coat of thinned dope to seal down all the gingerbread, assemble the prop and color the lights and this one will be ready to fly.

Right now with prop and noseblock (and 1.7g of tail weight) the model weighs 53.2g balanced.  24" span and about 93 sq in wing area - a little portly but not too bad.

Cheers,

Mike
