The stringer placement is really interesting in that all stringers are horizontal and they don't all pinch down and gather together at the tail. It seems like this would keep the shape of the fuselage but cut down on useless tail weight. You really don't need all the stringers at the tail as it is strong enough with just a couple. Was this the reasoning? I just have never seen this done before but it is a great idea.

A quick buble canopy and black tissue oval under it and your home free!!!

Tom, thanks for the black tissue reminder. I had forgotten that would make the cockpit look better under the canopy.

I looked for this thread and thought it was early 2019, but was wrong.

Here is where the F8f is today. I was building this for the Tom Akery Cookup.

The spackle looks good. Be ready for some low spots or 'holes' when you begin sanding the cowl. I usually have to go back in and apply a little more here and there to finish it off. I also seal it with Minwax Poly or thinned EZ Dope.

I took alf's tip to coat the cowl nose piece with Vinyl spacling for a filler coat.

I started carving the canopy mold pulg from (2) 1/2: blocks glued together.

I plan on cutting the top shape out on a jig saw.

Neal, good tip. The center section is covered and has 2 coats of dope.

Bob...a suggestion: If you haven't already glued the wing into place...you might consider a couple of heavy coats of dope on the center section...creates a smooth strong surface, just in case that rubber contacts the wing (I suspect it will)...a little assist to the wing and motor.  Also...protects the wing from motor lube.  Just a thought, Bob.

Nice work. Smiley

Thanks Tom, rfe3 and Alf for the kind words and help. I will give those a try.

Mike, the rubber goes over the wing, the motor peg is high on the fuselage rear.

One way that works pretty well for me is to take a screenshot of the area and then use a graphics program (I use Paint Shop Pro) to change the background color until I get a match with the tissue color.

For example, here are three samples that I then print on to a piece of the tissue to make a decal that I glue in place.

Bob - Your plane is looking absolutely great, covering smooth and nicely done. Curious however with the center section thru the middle, how do you put in the rubber?

That's looking very nice Bob.  The Navy markings look pretty close to blue Esaki - you could print the letters to the appropriate size, then put them over tissue and cut through the stack to make the lettering.
