Not having a lot of experience with electrics, so I would recommend checking out WattFlyer RC Electric Flight Forum.  We don't currently have an electric guru onboard.

I have one of the older KP 01 motors that came with a housing on the back which holds 4 50mAh Nicads.
It's been hanging around for about 10 years and I figure it's time I used it.
I would like to upgrade it to the later version which are set up for Lipos. Before I remove the batteries and housing is there any tips, tricks or technique I should be aware of?
I would like to use one of my Zombie controllers to control it and also, if it's not too hard, the double plug set up   that came with the motor whereby the charging lead goes into a charging jack which also acts as the power switch
