Well apparently I have created a catastrophic event in regards to my build. In essence my oversized posterior came in close proximity to my work and resulted in a failure. Completely demoralized at this point and it seems that in order to continue I will have to make a call to Guillows for more plastic parts and rebuild from scratch so I unfortunately have to let you all know that for the time being this project is on hold. Sad Cry

It's always a challenge to have your detachable wing panels mount back together exactly.  I use the building table to pin the sections together to assist in placing locating pins and rods that will enable the easy removal and replacement of the wing panels.

Once in place on the board, I use solid ribs at each wing panel joint and then with a small rattail file or hand drill to drill the holes I'm goin to place locating pin (often wooden toothpicks)through.  I then slip the pin in place and glue from the back side so the glue doesn't get between the two adjoining ribs. Hope this makes sense.

If using rods that telescope into each other, I start as above locating the holes. (One will be the OD (outside diameter of larger tube) size and the other will be the ID(internal diameter of the larger tube/OD of the inner tube) size.  The larger tube is usually in the larger wing section (Root Section of the wing) where the smaller telescoping tube is in the small or outer wing section and slides into the larger tube about an inch or so for static models, a bit more for flying models.
There is also a tongue and box setup for detachable wing panels.  Check out my DeHavilland Canada Dash 8 construction for that.  It has pictures to help clarify at the bottom of the page. The outer wing panels, outside the engine nacelles detach. Click Here

Damage to the wing that is now being addressed thinking of breaking the wing up into 3 sections for assembly and ease of construction but afraid it will be hard to keep the wing completely straight if made in sections

Your infill looks fantastic.  I've done a bit of infill and know how much patience it takes.  Kudos to you!

Super nice build. Your putting a lot of effort into it, it will look great!!

Not sure how I missed this build. I've been kinda missing lately. I also drive a truck and I live in Springfield. I also have that kit but never finished mine.
Good luck with yours. Looks great so far.

Back when I built in the truck, I got a large box and padded the inside, for travel. Styrofoam enables you to build a box big enough to transport the thing whole. and stays pretty solid. 1 inch foam glues together nicely and you can duct tape the edges for wear and tear.

Hope this helps.

Some new stuff happening with my build. Finally completed the infill on the nose section and did some preliminary painting to check out the ability of the paint to approximate the actual metal skin. Not a perfect fit but for my son I don’t think he will mind much and I am sure he will enjoy it hanging from the ceiling in his room. Still have some sanding to do on the center pod and a pothole has unfortunately destroyed half of my main wing so back to the drawing board for a repair  Angry Wink

Added the wheel bump I was able to save from the original plastic part and incorporated it into the carving and it seems to have added the right look.

Looking good.  Thymekiller knows about building in the cab of his truck!  Where there's a will there's a way!
Keep up the great work!

So now that I have a few hours to kill I knew I would have to reacquaint myself with my project and attempt a work around on the nose landing gear door that has so far been the bane of my existence! Made the decision to just throw out the plastic parts that don't fit and carve my own from balsa scrap. Not exactly scale but for the application it is going to be used as I thought it pretty close. Still working on the sanding to shape but thought I would post what I came up with as a solution. Hope all will forgive the disarray of the cab in my truck along with the wood chips and sawdust lol!!

Your eyeballing techniques looks great.  You're not alone in the "guessestimate department."  When it comes to modeling outside the box, that's when all common sense goes out the window and we're left with "what looks good to the eye."

The modeling world is filled with anecdotes of modelers having to throw out all CAD, CNC, 3-D printing and any calculations done on ratios & proportions between the full scale prototype and the replicated model in which the builder is left with nothing more than his/her's best guess.

Trust me, you're doing great!

Sorry to hear of your work.  COVID does that.  With this economy going in all directions, at least you've got a job and working overtime really does pay off.  As a former big rig driver myself, I can easily relate to your situation.  It'll all work out.  The fact you can even squeeze in time just building a model, and a large Guillow's P-38 that is being constructed far beyond what is called for in the instructions, is truly a fantastic feat in itself.  Then to add to the fact you're building it in your rig.....  Wow!  Please give yourself a pat on the back.  You deserve it.

Good hearing from you and thank you for taking a few moments to post your build.  The work you've done is going great.

Ok a few things have been done but recently with COVID going on my company is trying to jump through hoops to keep all the excess freight rolling and my extra time for work has been non existent to say the least! No rest for the weary! Have been trying to create a box of sorts for the retractable nose gear and so far success has eluded me. Not quite sure if  "eyeballing" can even be an actual engineering term but right now that seems to be my course of action. Only time will tell and maybe a few more sheets of balsa Roll Eyes

Glad to see you've made some progress.  Keep taking your time.  Infilling isn't a bad thing.  To recut everything down by 1/16th all around to account for sheeting is not worth the effort; even if you had another kit and starting fresh.  Ask me.

You're doing the right thing.  The only time you may wish to do sheeting is when the model is expressly designed for sheeting.  Otherwise, infilling is the way to go.

Keep all the plastic stuff.  They'll. come in handy.

From what I can see of your pictures, you're doing a great job!  I make use of Spackling all the time whether I'm infilling or sheeting.

your progress is great and I'm one of those that has much time between posts even with a great deal of time on my hands. The infill is looking very good and anxious to see how you utilize the plastic parts.

Before I forget.... apparently there has been a formula change with spackle that includes a type of poly which makes it hard to sand so since this is going to be display only felt that the good old heavy weight spackle will work just as well and one can still sand that version.
