Thanks Pete.  FM plans service still offers half a dozen or so Longstreth plans.  I imagine postage to Germany would be a prohibitive fraction of the total cost - might be tolerable if you were to order multiple plans.

It was a great-flying model, and a lot of fun...

I commented on the video, Mike.  Terrific flights and sorry about the loss.

I had the FM issue, but somehow didn't save the Windicator plan before disposing most of my magazine collections.  I still have a bunch of FM's so a search is on.  I'm surprised that more of Longstreth's plans haven't gotten to Outerzone (there's only ONE!).

Sorry about the loss.  Sad Perhaps there should be an ultralight at the site for chasing errant models?  Cheesy )

The plan for the Windicator was in Flying Models, I believe. I don't recall where you got the plans, but you made excellent work of it!

later:  There goes my mind. I just had to go back a bit to read up on it. You enlarged the plans published in the FM mag.

This Saturday the Windindicator flew away...

I was flying the model in somewhat stiff breezes at the Texas Cloud Climbers meet in Hamilton TX.  I'd put in the equivalent of a long loop of 3/16" rubber (1 loop 1/8" plus 1 loop 1/16") to help the model climb up out of ground turbulence into steadier air.  After dealing with some bunching at the peg I re-braided the motor and flew a few trim flights to tweak balance and stab angle - things looked good so I started official flights.

First flight had a decent pattern but didn't grab any lift and got blown down at 72 seconds.  On the second flight I waited a bit and launched into what felt like a bit of a lull in the breeze.  The model weathervaned straight into the breeze and went up like an elevator!  Eventually it started to turn and circled rapidly downwind, climbing all the way with a group of sparrows harassing it.

At two minutes it was still way up there and drifting downwind off the field.  By three minutes it was a dot, coming slowly down but only kept in sight by the sparrows buzzing around it.  Thirty second later it was still at least 10 deg above the horizon, far downwind of the field and overrun area, never to be seen again.

Rich Adams caught a photo of me launching it - the last evidence of its existence.  I now need another Embryo...maybe with a DT this time.

Me too!  Thanks guys - I love most of my builds, but it's been a while since building and flying a model gave me this much pure joy.  I grin every time I look at this one.

Beautiful plane, great flights, who could ask for more. Really glad you were able to rescue the plane.

Thanks guys!  Weather this morning was beautiful so the Windindicator got some wind under its wings.  Trimming went well - almost too well...  Video at:

Beautiful work and I too appreciate the Canadian colors.

Wrapped up the Windindicator build today.  Ended up not using the molded canopy since the model was getting nose-heavy and I could save over a gram up front doing the canopy with sheet plastic as shown on the plan.  Weight without motor is just under 17g with the cg just in front of the spar.  May have to put a bit of tail weight on it, we'll see once I get a motor in it.

Love how the color scheme came out, and how it looks with the big tires.  Puts a smile on my face just sitting there, can't wait to see it in the air.

Cheers,

Mike
