from the little I've read... been able to find...
all colors were used.  it is the exact shades that are the feel of a
decade or time frame...  cream is the white of choice
light green is what I think as a '50s choice

I recall reading "with red pinstripes" or "red accents" the most.
You get to guess the other colors from the photos.
... Grey and black would look authentic, I suppose.

My favorite color scheme is white and medium blue leading edges
and accents...   I have no idea if that is 30's style.

mostly, I think the paint schemes rather than the colors
will be the path to looking like an old timer.

it took me a long time to get copper wire/solder
to work on landing gear.
I recall 60 grit sandpaper and a lot of growling
finally got the solder to flow onto the music wire.

looks good!

SLOW work these days...just tired, I have made the undercarriage for the big girl..filled up my 'cuss jar' in the process. Those wires were gonna be made neat, or not at all..then I got em, then wrapped with copper wire, soldered good! Tongue
Picture of the battery bay, I will have good airflow over the controller and battery. It may not show well, but the airhole cutout has screen in it.
Then there's the 20# Tom cat in my build area...surprisingly, he never jumps up on anything....at 20lbs....he would be a crusher!!!
Next up is painting the engine area to kinda protect the bare wood...I was thinking black....but not sure....any ideas of a better color??....I want it to kinda say 1930's freeflight color....???

doing loops with a buzzard...

ok... but I will state I'd be more impressed with a roll from that bird...

I am an intuitive engineer
(sometimes things break ... sometimes not...)
The plans I remember  it has been a ...gah the years get by quick...
a while since I have seen the plans.
for RC work I had decided the center panels needed reinforcing
of the main spar.
I had 5 layer 1/8 ply as the material of choice.
as that was how the 40 sized plane or two meter gliders I built were jointed.

What bugs me is that  I recall one glued the panels at the center
without cross the center joint members like a spar doubler.
I do not trust this memory.
However...
in another  vague memory...
someone said doped silk was used like fiberglass.
a center stripe laid up much the same way.

what I can't dredge up is the plan/model that was being discussed.
At an RC field, talking...old time design and building techniques
and some one's old silk covered large modified Free Flight plane.
the plane being marshaled to the flight line being the starting point...

next time don't fly so high.
parts come down quicker that way :--D

Victor, when you build the wing, add ply gussets across that joint between wings.....I lost a very nice buzzard and .29 motor....I was doing loops.....and the wing just sheered in two....I cut the motor to idle.....but it still became a ICBM.....took about 2 minutes for the wings to rotate to the ground....I used them again Roll Eyes

the buzzard was a design for a large engine on the nose.

I had decided I would push the prop/engine out a bit
on maple engine rails to reduce the amount of ballast needed.

at some point it will begin  to look like a balsa - stick type
not a buzzard.

I had decided the original designer could build truly light tails.
not a talent I have.

am looking forward to your posts and flights.

Great story victor, yeah....me too....I love my engines to much! I can't imagine watching the record flight of 58min..... Shocked Shocked Shocked
This one is going electric, my flying buddy is supplying the motor and gear, I'm supplying the build. He plans on using it in a fall contest, timed motor run...I see she may need 2 pounds of nose weight Angry at this point.....the tail was built with micro servos in it, so we could remove/replace with fixed or DT tail.....someday we both make a crazy decision to try a ff Cheesy

oh the gussets.
oh the many gussets.

the buzzard bombshell was the first free flight bird I ever heard about.

the middle of the middle of the story was my brother came home and was
going on over a buddy he was helping build a big model airplane
... I recall being skeptical and saying so.
it was a free flight thing like the guillows kits
only a lot bigger.
then described it...

my mind had pretty much stopped at allowing a biiiiiig model  plane
like the buzzard loose.  Wha???

he was rattling on and I picked back up as he
complained at cutting out and gluing up many gussets.
Since then I have found buzzard plans.

that day a lot of new ideas and airplane models
were brought to my attention.

I am still unwilling to let an engine go on a free flight.

Fuse is getting done...I'm on the 'fiddly parts' now, wing and LG attachments, windows, then one final sanding then cover.
The wing is straight forward build....just 72" of it to build! Tongue

I have progress to report...the tail feather are just about done. I servo mounted in the tail, just in case my buddy wants to FF this one...all I have to do is remove 2 nylon bolts, remove tail complete with RC RX, and replace with a foam elev and rudder.... Smiley
This one will be electric. Covering to start soon....then build a wing.
