My next task was to form the main landing gear wire with a pair of pliers.  Once complete found it to be a perfect fit in the bulkheads preformed slot!

Your PT-17 looks sharp.  Love the colors.  The sanding between stringers looks good.  Maybe I will give it a try.  Thanks for the tips!

That's looking very nice - I like the Herr kits.  I've been working on a Sterling PT-17 this fall, have been a bit hung up the last month or so with just the engine and tailwheel to go.  I'm doing a cropduster with the tailwheel fairing removed, so all the hardware shows.

A suggestion before you get to covering the fuselage - add a motor peg mount just aft of former 18.  This model's got a long tail arm and having the peg back by the tail is going to put most of your rubber aft of the CG and cause you to need a lot more noseweight.  You can see where I put mine in the bones picture.  This will also keep the rubber out of the narrow aft portion of the fuselage and can help prevent the rubber from catching on the structure and binding up near the peg.

If you compare the bones and covered shots you can see how the formers have been sanded flat between the stringers and how that looks once the tissue goes on.

Look forward to following the rest of your build!

Mike

Lots of carving/sanding/shaping.  I'm not totally finished and am going to tweak the tail a bit more.  But here is what it looks like thus far.

Not to worry! I didn't know there was such a thing until the internet came along and I read about it on some forum. Ignorance is bliss and all that!!

I sand my fuselage formers down if only because I think it makes it easier to cover with tissue or balsa.

Up early again.  The plane called to me.  Hehe.

Started the morning by bending up the tail wheel wire.  The plans don't make it too clear so I went off what I've done in the past.  Turned out OK I think.

There's a heap of balsa added to the rear.  I'm kinda worried about what kind of weight it's going to place back there.  Going to do some judicious sanding once the glue sets up.

I used epoxy to install the wire and plain white glue for the fairing part.

Gentlemen

Thank you for your kind words.  Really appreciated.  I'm just trying to do the best I can.  she's not perfect but I'm pretty pleased how things are going at this point.

I have not tried the sand the humps between stringers before.  It's what the professionals do so might give it a go.  In my mind I figured leaving them the way they are would help define the shape better.  I'll cross that bridge as I get closer to covering time.

I'm going to add the tail wheel wire as per plan tomorrow.  Then give the fuselage a good sanding.  Once that's complete I'll add the main undercarriage.  After that it's wing time.

  Night all!

Excellent work!

Round fuselage profiles present us with a decision. "Starved horse" look or not! If we don't sand the curved areas of the formers that stand above the stringers, then we get a look that some choose to avoid. A sanding block will usually make quick work of this.
