Nice Zero!  I've yet to build me a Zero.  One of these days.  I do like the thought of a 27" Pete.

Just double the Pres Bruning plan and you've got your "jump point."  This Zero started out from a Guillows 16" Rufe plan to evolve into a 32" ws Zero...rc.Smiley

I like the Pete but I tend to prefer a bit bigger span model.  27" is the magic number for me.

Hi Ian...well...Rufe, built by Nakajima...was an attempt to get a similar performance of the A6M Zero-sen into a float plane.  Here's the surprising fact...statistical performance of Pete and Rufe were literally comparable!  Actually...Pete was far more versatile in its operational application.  As such...only a third the number of Rufes (327) were manufactured as the bi-plane Pete...Reikan (999). Smiley  Considering the Zero, Rufe was definitely a disappointment.  It's not difficult to envision what happened...Zero was such a fine balance in its design (in order to achieve such phenomenal performance)...that addition of float apparatus took it all away.  All modifications of the initial A6M2 required up-engining with increased fuel...and the fine balance of the original was very difficult if not impossible to maintain. Huh

Does look like Nakajima was using the same Mitsubishi float and sponsons on its Rufe design as used on Pete.  Incidentally, I notice the similarities earlier and have considered reducing Guillow's Rufe float design if P.B.'s design proves awkward.  Wink

Thanks Ian Smiley

Looks good. I am surprised that they got such performance out of it with all the drag from those floats. Looks like the inspiration for the Rufe.

Mitsubishi F1M2 Type 0 Model 11 Reikan (PETE)

Considering the year of its origin (1934), the Reikan was a remarkably capable aircraft.  While not particularly fast (260 mph), it could attain an altitude of 30,000 feet, had a good rate-of-climb, and could function well as an artillery-spotter, general recon aircraft, a bomber, and even as a fighter...was highly maneuverable, easy to fly, and easily maintained.  Built to specification of the Imperial Japanese Navy, more than 900 units were manufactured...the last unit coming off the line in 1944.  Designed to be catapult-launched, it quickly transitioned to a "land-based" combat role.  Simply said, anywhere the IJN was to be found, so was found the versatile Reikan.

My personal opinion of P.Bruning's F1M plan is that it's "exclusive," that is...rare...found at Hip Pocket.  As for its layout...it's a mess...crowded and confusing...but it is what it is...exclusive.  Smiley

I've always like this plane.  It's on my to do list but not close to the top!!!  I shall enjoy your build. Didn't the allies call it a "Pete"?

A name for a quintessential recon aircraft...Reikan.  The Japanese define that name as meaning "able to sense the supernatural," i.e., inspiration.

天才は1パーセントが霊感であり、99パーセントは精進である。

Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration.
