My next project, working simultaneously with this one, is the Dumas Aeronca Champ.  The Chipmunk will be worked on as well as I get it prepped for covering.  Depending on timelines, they both might be covered around the same time.  Time will tell.

I'll be starting another build thread for the Champ.  Hopefully you all don't mind me sharing my builds with you.

Too Much Glue

Thank you!

For general airframe assembly I use Elmers Glue All.  And to attach my tissue I use Elmers Glue Gel.

One glue I avoid is CA.  The reason being is it tends to soak into the balsa and make it rock hard and un-sandable.  I don't frown on folks that use it.  By all means if it works for you then go for it.  Just isn't my cup of tea.

Nice clean looking frames. Outside of epoxy for the dihedral breaks, what type of glue do you use?

I'll be sure to protect the nose with tape while sanding.  Thanks for the tip.

Appreciate the comments.  Thanks much!!

  On smaller craft, I use elmers for spar joints also. One way to test is glue 2 pieces face to face and see if you can split them, without destroying the wood. Or glue 2 strips side by side and break them. Glue them at the angle to match your main spars. Like a test piece. Test what breaks, the glue or the wood?  Elmers is pretty good glue for what we do.
{in my humble opinion}
  A great lot depends on the joint design. I like when the main upper spars pass each other at the joint, like yours do, rather than butt joint. In your case the spars can glue face to face, inside of a slot or cradle, so the joint is crazy strong.

If the glue joint is stronger than the wood, it's a winner.
Looking really good friend.

Looks great.  When you start sanding the nose to shape you might want to wrap the fuselage just behind the noseblock with masking tape. It works great to protect the fuselage as you shape the block.

Starting to look like a Chipmunk.  Bones mostly assembled at this point.  Few bits and pieces to attend to but getting there.

Sky I only use a very minute amount on the contact surfaces.  I haven't weighed the epoxy but I really use it sparingly.  I'm just worried any other type of glue wouldn't be strong enough for the dihedral joints.  Maybe I'm wrong?

Epoxy sounds a bit heavy for a rubber powered model.  Have you ever weighed the wing with the epoxy?

Wings being joined.  For this I used 5 minute epoxy (it's my old standby for joining wings as it is what I use on my RC aircraft builds).

Note: I had to install the missing rib from the bottom of the wing center section.  Glad that's fixed now!
