Cream is a tough color to come by in tissue.

It looks like it's coming along great. Although, the color does look a little on the dark side.

I find Hallmark tissue to work well with silver, gold and other colors with fair wet strength depending on the color.

Often if there's no Hallmark store you can find the Hallmark tissue at Walmart.

Steady but slow progress.

The Hobby Lobby gift wrap tissue has been a real hassle. Practically no wet strength at all, very sensitive to adjustments, tissue easily falls apart. I did the wings in sections with rib caps to provide a better gluing surface. Tissue went on dry using Scotch glue sticks. I used pastel chalk to add a bit more opaqueness.

Normally I will apply a thinned dope coat but was afraid that the pressure of the brush would push thru the tissue after shrinking with water/alcohol mix. So I applied Krylon gloss. Was happy to see that the Krylon coats (2) seemed to remove some small wrinkles along the wing leading edge.

The assembly is just for show. I'll remove the surfaces and start adding the tissue piece by piece.

Lastly will be adding the red trim and decals. The tissue seems too yellow, the cowling is closer to original. I might add an acrylic over-spray...or not.

That's a gorgeous scheme and Thyme is right about fingernail polish.  It's basically lacquer so it can be thinned with laquer thinner or acetone (nail polish remover).  I see your delima with the tissue, it seems just too dark compaired to the picts you've posted.  I look forward to see what you come up with as a solution.  I know whatever it is, it will be stunning!!!

Some tissues are better than others. Got my fingers crossed for ya'.

Hope this helps, I know nothing about paint types, but I've been told that fingernail polish can be sprayed and comes in every color under the sun. ?

Really love the plane. Excellent wood work and very clever wire work.  Good idea using paper clips.

An update. Much of the construction work is mostly done, landing gear to go.

Turner's Air Express was done in a cream and red scheme, so the first item was to find a cream coloring method. A visit to the LHS resulted if finding a bottle of SIG cream dope but after brushing this on to the cowl. I thought the result was too yellowish. Maybe I could find a quality air brush acrylic (Vallejo or Mission Models) but getting the right color was a challenge. I looked at artist's acrylics and found a cream that looked just about right at Hobby Lobby. And also found some of their gift wrap tissue that just might work. A test sample was tried on a frame and came out OK. I doped it and the cream color took a hit. Maybe I could cover without doping...I know, but I always dope, been that way for lots of years now!

I'm using soft wire to mount the wing, a technique that I used on my Fokker DVIII. I straightened out a couple of large paper clips and glued them into the fuselage to use as the primary cabane struts. The wire bends easily and is much easier to work with than music wire. I'll bend the wires up and leave a short piece to fit into small plastic tubes that have been glued into the wing center box. I'll use pieces of cocktail straws to cover the wire.

The wing is scale, meaning no dihedral. The tail parts are laminated using 1/16" and 1/20" strips. I use SIG yellow glue.

Added: This gift wrap tissue is relatively opaque when applied, but doping it makes it more translucent. Krylon has the same effect. Then I tried chalking the tissue with Panpastel yellow ochre and found that the tissue remains pretty opaque despite doping or a Krylon overspray.

The basic fuselage with card stock and 1/32" balsa covering the front end.

You might bend a thin wire framework covering the the wire with balsa to hide it.  Like "D" string for a guitar.  Just a thought.

This is an extremely popular subject considering how few of them were actually built. (8)

17". Not looking forward to the parasol wing attachment. Undecided yet on how I'll do it. Probably a combination of actual load bearing and dummy cabanes. The real deal is a complicated mess.

I'm thinking of using white Esaki that I have colored with a Panpastel yellow ochre tint (thanks to MKelly for that idea). I'll do the trim with red tissue and gold paint..

The 20s and 30s seem to be a target rich environment for things to model. Military or civilian, what a collection of amazing designs.

Numerous Lockheed models were produced from the late 20s to the early 30s. Most were successful, at least one, the Explorer, was not. Models included the Explorer, Vega, Altair, Sirius, Orion, and the next design for my work bench, the Air Express. Specifically the Roscoe Turner Gilmore Lion version.
