Lol, its not Free Flight. Free Flight is without external control. Thats the whole point. Thats where the magic is.

  I also love Domoremaths vids and I believe that one channel to steer with is a valid addition in many cases.
   These days they are getting harder to chase, harder to find a field to fly in.
   Rudder only wont help with altitude or correct for a super bad setup but at least it might land where you can get it back.
   If the trim is correct, and wind is agreeable, you wont need much or ANY rudder assist.  Free Flight is still an option, and the goal, but with a life boat.  You dont HAVE to steer it, but its nice that you can.
   That being said, for many people, rudder control is an only option and the only way they can fly at all.
   I might even try it myself and just know in my mind that if I touch that gimbal,  its r/c, not Free Flight.
  Would rather r/c than lose it or not be able to fly at all. I think in alot of ways, rudder only can enable some people to try harder and reach farther than might be otherwise possible. I'm mostly a small field flyer,  like Tom describes, but I sometimes wonder what if I loaded this baby up and go for broke? Bigger prop, more rubber, and wind to the breaking point.  What would happen.? Rudder control would enable that.

When I was a kid, my big brother got me started in
model airplanes with control line models, which was
fun for a while...but soon got to be boring.

So, I moved on to R/C models, being much more complex
and expensive...I built a dozen or so.
But, this too started to get old after a while.

Then I tried Free Flight, and realized that this was different.
With the huge variety of model types and power sources,
and the challenge of creating an aircraft
that could fly all on its own, I knew I had found something
that would hold my interest forever.

But, these day's it's getting hard to find the kind of
open space that is required for Free Flight.
And some modelers are adding micro R/C assist
to keep their planes on the field,
as an alternative to a dethermalizer.
