This process can seem to be very laborious...but if carefully executed can result in a model that's very pleasing.  If one scours the 'net...sometimes "skins" can be found that if of sufficient resolution can really do the trick.  Here's my Aviatik that to date is the only model I've ever done this to...completely covered with printed skins.

Mike Kelly is a true artist with this technique...check out his "Thud" build.
