Thanks for the link Sky.  I'll check it out what it recommends.

I'm making progress.  I joined the wing halves finished sheeting the wing center.  Mounted the rudder and stabilizer.  I've also gone through all my old model boxes and found pushrods and connectors and control horns for the plane    Smiley

I'm getting close to covering.

Electric power systems are not in my assortment of skills...I found this on RCgroups, "How to Choose a power system".  Here's a link: click here

Hope this will be helpful!

I'm making some progress and I'm handling the engine mount now and motor selection.

The motor shown mounted is a Firepower 370.  I also have a Firepower 300.  I'm new to electric motors so I'm not sure how much motor I will need.  I'm hoping to use my 7.4V, 1300mAh, 2S batteries and the Talon 25 ESC.

Also shown is my flight pack laid roughly in place.  The later photos with the gear in the plane balances just about right, so adjusting with the battery right at the CG should be easy.

Are there any recommendations on the motor choice? and Prop?  Mounted was a 9 inch but I think that's way too big.  I looked at what I have which is 8, 7 and 6 inch prop options.

Total plane weight now, with gear is just under 15 ounces.  The plans state a weight of 19 oz so I think I will be close to target when complete.

The fuselage came together nicely.   The side and top/bottom tabs really work well to jig it together.  It took quite a bit of test fitting and trimming and repeating.  But once right it worked great.

I also got to use my hole cutter and had really nice results.  Only reduced weight by .1 oz (2.8 grams) but every bit will help with this beast.

I agree.  The wing is sturdy.

I got the left wing built and when I went to pair it with the right wing I am 1/8 inch off on the chord somehow??  Oh well.  I added a 1/8 sq stick on the trailing edge to even it out.  It should sand in nicely.  Once I epoxy the wing halves together I'll cover the last center sheeting area.

Looks like a very sturdy wing.  A bit stronger than a butterfly I think!!

The left wing is coming together quickly.  I don't recall ever building this way before - leading and trailing edge sheeting, then cap strips and then building the LE, spars and ribs on top of that.  Kind of slick.

Hello everyone.

I'm back after a long break from building.  My usual projects have been rubber powered, small planes, but I'm switching it up.

This is an old kit from the late 70 - early 80s I got off Ebay.
45.5 span, estimated at ~ 23 oz and designed for an .049.  I'll use an electric motor for power.

I retired last August and I think now is a great time to learn to fly RC!!  I built and flew RC planes in the 80/90's, but then life got busy.  So here I go building a training aircraft.

The kit was complete and with the balsa still in plastic bags.  Parts are 'die-crushed' as per the era, but it's such a luxury vs. building from scratch.  Some of wood is too dry to use i.e. the wing leading edge top sheeting split when bending.  I am also going to TRY to build it light and may cut some lightening holes in the fuselage and build up the tail surfaces vs. using solid sheets.

Here are some photos of the right wing.  I had forgotten all about the use of rib cap strips!

Next up, oil the wing plan, flip it over and build the left wing.

Brad
