It is a good idea to read the labels on the products that we use. Dust masks are useless against any air-borne particles. You need a good fitting respirator style mask with NIOSH filters - the kind of thing that they use in professional spray painting. Even those will not keep out the chemical aromatics at the molecular level - at least not for very long. A good spray booth is equipped with a fan that sucks the air from your side of the booth and exhausts it to the outside air. And be careful where it exhausts! Look out for pets and gardens.

Started color work for my Spirit of St. Louis this morning and airbrushed a few light coats of Model Master Silver paint. The blow back from my spray booth was incredible and the smell is different than anything I have ever sprayed. Also had an almost instantaneous headache even with a well-fitting mask, the odor still was detectable and the over spray was there as well. This material contains finely ground metal products and will not purge from your lungs, read that to mean this is a very dangerous paint. Any more color work except brushing will need to wait for a calm morning to take my compressor and all work out doors. Almost wish I had not started the Spirit but will carry on. I'll post further work with dilution and clean up on down the road.
Mike

PS

Thinking more about this debacle, the headache was caused by the carrier. While most acrylics are water-based (and these are as well) they have no identifying odor while these paints have a completely different odor.

As to clean up, my airbrush came absolutely clean with plain water and a further cleaning with  my own airbrush cleaner, 50/50 Windex and water.
