I made a 4 1/4" prop out of a piece of 1/8 and 1/4 inch sheet glued together. First pic is of the blank with rough cut outlines. The second pic is with the back side of the blade carved and sanded flat. The third pic is of the finished prop with the forward surface carved and sanded to shape and the back side having a concave section sanded into it. I painted it with a black sharpie and this morning I installed a Nason style bail. I first drilled a 1/16" hole perpendicular to the prop shaft and glued it in place on the lighter side of the prop. The bail was bent out of thin music wire.

I took the Libel outside this afternoon for a glide test, but it is getting too windy for a powered flight for this model. It only weighs 8.55 grams without rubber.

I installed the struts and tension bars and installed a windscreen. Fresh set of pics. I glued up some balsa to carve a prop. Probably finish over the weekend.

This plane looks fantastic!! Awesome work.  It probably weighs less than my typical stabilizer  Angry

I printed some tissue and cut it out for the Registration numbers and control lines. I marked the positions of the lines with a fine point sharpie, but when I doped the tissue, the sharpie ran and blurred the lines in a couple of places. I glued the parts together last night. I still have to finish the main struts and tailplane struts and windshield and then to carve a prop. I found that the original placement of the pilot on his perch would be in the path of the motor, so I moved him to perch in the left side window out of the way. I tried a test glide, and it is quite light at 7.07 grams so far. It needs a bit more nose weight, which the prop should take care of.

Ian - The tissue and color is great. Almost missed the pilot in the left pic. Got a better view in the right hand pic, nice carving.

I love the pilot (Woodstock?) and the LG strut.

I made and mounted the wheels and L/G legs today. I also printed some markings on tissue which I will apply to the flying surfaces before mounting the wing, etc. The L/G  compression struts are bamboo wound with bond paper and painted with acrylics. The pilot is happy to have a plane that matches his feathers.

I water-shrink the tissue on a frame, then apply to the plane. I do one more misting to encourage shrinking, then paint.

I carved a pilot for the Libel yesterday, but my eyes were too big, and he was so enormous that he wouldn't fit in the cockpit. So today I carved a smaller one out of some 1/8" medium grade balsa (progress shown top to bottom). This is about as tiny as I can possibly make one. Before painting with acrylics, it weighed 0.06g and after painting it was 0.10g. It shouldn't add too much weight to the cockpit   Cheesy . I painted the plane parts with lacquer thinned with acetone.

So, as I understand it, you apply the tissue covering to the wing.  Carefully stretch out whatever wrinkles there are and just leave it "as is?"  No doping or additional shrinkage?

Yes, I am using pre-shrunk dollar store tissue, dull side out for covering. I have been working on covering this afternoon. The uncovered wing weighed 1.41g, and covered it was 2.52g. I am painting the noseblock with yellow acrylic paint rather than applying tissue on such a curved surface.

Will you use pre-shrunk tissue for covering?  I would be afraid of wraps.

I love this build and the process of using the simple glider kit as your wood stock.  Awesome  Smiley

Nice fuselage Ian. The wing looks rock solid now.

Thanks guys. I put some diagonal bracing in the wing because it seems a little flimsy without it. Dihedral glued into place. Noseblock formed and mounted. I put it together for a 'bones' shot before I start covering. I have made some other bits, but they won't go on until assembly. I know that the original was grey, but I am thinking of doing this in yellow.
