Wow - that looks spectacular.

I agree, your covering job is fantastic.  But I also understand the need to hide all the internals in an rc bird.  This is going to be a great model!  Keep up the great work!

I'm still trying to make up my mind on color & trim- I'm inclined to do an (improper) WTS UPF-7 scheme in memory of my Grandad: Yella wings, blue fuselage, nothing but a small tail number.

You could get pretty close to a UPF-7 by modifying a YMF. They were both "F" series airframes, so they're pretty similar. The empennage is different, the UP-7 had a flat top wing, and of course, the un-cowled Continental. The fuselage on a YMF was a little fatter amidships to accommodate the two-abreast passenger seating, but who'd notice?

Craig - that is really coming together.       I re-read your thread and it fully explains how you got to this point.  You also made me look up the word "scoche" LOL.     Your attachments for your struts are excellent.  Now it all makes sense to me when I look back at your pictures.  I bet your Grampa would have loved to have seen this 30" Waco YMF Radio Control balsa biplane model - with wheel pants     - come to life !!!    Oh! - and a radial engine to boot!  Like the slogan goes - "Real planes had round engines and two wings" ...

The cabane & interplane struts are made up of 1/32" music wire, sheeted in balsa to look like oval tubing. That's actually what I'm working on today. Everything goes through eyelets in 8 1/16" plywood ribs- except the cabanes which plug into 1/16" aluminum tubing crossmembers in the fuselage. The lower wing is held in the front of the fuselage by an eighth inch tube dowel stuck through a corresponding hole in the former, with magnets in the back. All the struts will be epoxied in the eyelets save for the cabanes. By extracting the engine/ battery tray assembly and pulling the lower wing dowel from the front, then releasing the (spring-loaded outward) cabanes, the entire wing assembly comes off for access to the radios. BTW, dry-assembling it to check fit, incidence, etc. was one of those "Now, with your third, fourth, and fifth hand..." type of things!

Nice legs!  A Waco definitely wouldn't look right on skinny tires.

I built the spats per plan first, and used the lightweight wheel/tire package they suggested. They're built up of laser-cut plywood with a neoprene o-ring tire, and are quite light. But the size worked out, at this scale (1/12) , to be the same as a 2.25 X 20 BMX bicycle tire, and it looked silly. The actual aircraft runs 7.50/10 balloon tires, so I ordered up a set of Dubro ultralight treaded 2" tires and built another set of spats. I stayed with the same profile, but blew them out 3/8" wider to clear the tires. As the saying goes, t'aint right until it looks right! Good thing I left the axle stubs long...
The leg fairings are hand-formed of the same 35ga aluminum I used for the screen frame.
It gained 6 grams, but on a 1 pound airplane I can live with it. They are properly voluptuous now! I'll use the light wheels on a WW! bird at some point.
