Little steps....  Interesting bit of history concerning RAF squadron codes...any time British intelligence suspected that the Germans were associating a particular fuselage code with a specific unit...they'd change it...at least temporarily!  Makes thing  just a bit confusing.  Also...I've discovered that there's a lot of artistic licence concerning actual location of these codes on the aircraft fuselage.  Just about the only way to verify any of it is to find photos of BOTH sides of the ac....  Imagine how unlikely that is!

Your eyes are ok, Tom...not to worry.  I used the masking tape on the Spit's wings...decided it was ugly...then just sprayed the remainder...whatever I got.  It's easy to see that I've arrived at that point in a build when I'm ready to move on...'cause I'm not very particular about the outcome of things.  Should have used a bit more care....  The green swaths are too wide...should be more brown...and lines should be more irregular in pattern.  And last, but not least...one should work in the best light available...not in a dark cave.  Ok...I'll excuse myself with, "Hey, this is a mere dimer!" 

At the time I constructed the Dornier...was looking at a German WW2 tech manual...could see that the ac was broken down into three basic sub-sections...the wing, complete with that section of fuselage, the nose section from the wing leading edge forward, and the aft fuselage and empennage, from the wing trailing edge aft.  Just for fun, I decided to build the model that way...then join it all together.  Worked out great!  Used flexible control rods...through conduits...just connected as the sections were joined...all radio gear and servos in the nose section.  Nose top cover comes off...held in place with dress-maker's snaps.  A lot of fun....  As I was building the model...I do recall thinking that it would make a nice stick n' tissue project...long wing...and that's sorta what it looked like, until I sheeted and planked everything.

masking tape, Tom...masking tape...and those crisp lines are what I don't like.

Here I'm trying to create that German splinter camo effect...using a brush.  The problem with brushwork on tissue is that invariably, out in the sunlight...all those brush marks are going to be obvious!  I'm tempted to leave the wings just as they are.

The Dornier was back in the days when I was a glutton for punishment...underside was black.

Very nice work, colors are great and did notice the rubber peg hit the center of the lozenge, nice aim.

Thanks, Tom and Mike...this entire project is all boiling down to the finish-work.  Reminds me of a cube that's painted to look like a Holstein cow.  Ain't much until the illusions appear.

Got The Trio doped yesterday...all stood the process very well.  Doped is the name of the process in this case, since I've been using thinned clear brushing lacquer for the past year.  Trick is to get it thinned just the "right" amount...too much lacquer, it's too heavy for the tissue and takes forever to really cure...too thin and it's like painting the tissue with thinner...just disappears when cured.  Don't ask me about ratios because it's just trial n' error 'til it's right.  When the mixture is correct...acts just like butyrate dope...even smells the same.

My apologies to those out there who prefer an opaque finish, chalking, et al.  Sometimes when I cover a model...I really despair at seeing all the beautiful bone-work disappear...after all, it is a flying model, and a dimer to boot.  Just a matter of preference...I'd be building in a different category if it were otherwise. 

Now to come up with some sort of air-brushed camo....
