Ok back to this build, I took time out, from all balsa projects to work on a metal project. James lives in Canada, and we became friends over the net, he had a nice engine collection, and wanted a twin 049 Cox....so, he sent me a bag of parts, and after some slow cutting and file work....I'll be able to send him a finished engine. All is left, weld the case haves...it turned out well, and just might run!

Tissue covering going on...she's gonna be blue/white...

Couple tricks I learned,
sand slowly and with fine paper. Sanding makes heat on the surface of the wood. Heat will warp the stuff.
S L O W L Y.  Thin wood requires you to almost polish your way to the finish product. Thicker stuff not so much.

Don't for get to add in the thickness of your sand paper. For 1/64, you might want 1/32 shims or rails. Maybe a tad thicker.  Depends on the thickness of the paper.   I am thinking you could use many layers of packing tape for the rails and remove layers to get down to the thickness you need. Just a thought.

You wont need to glue your rails permanently.  The sand paper you glued to the glass with make a "grabby " surface to help hold the rails in place. Tape them on the ends if it helps.

Slow and gentle wins this game.  Creep up on the final thickness.

You can use your glass sheet to make a dead flat sanding bock.
Glue you base paper to the glass and use that to make a flat spot on the bottom of a 2x4 or some scrap piece of scrap wood that is easy to hold. After you make your block flat, attach sand paper to the block and there you go. Be sure to leave enough block to ride those rails with out sanding them also. I did that once and my wood almost disappeared, lol

You will get it I'm sure. I hope it works for you as well as it did for me. Side note, I have never measured 1/64 wood. I just hold it up to the light. Im sure you can see light thru 1/64, Not like a window, but you will see it for sure.  Will show up as streaks if you use A grain.  Balsa wood is not consistent at all.

One more thing, try it on scrap first to get your final desired thickness. You might prefer A grain over C grain for this. Maybe heavy wood is better than soft wood. It's up to you.
I do this alot on the table saw. Cut a scrap to check for size. Pine is cheap, walnut not so much. Test cut the pine first. Sacrifice/practice on the lower end common stuff so the good stuff will fit on the first try.

No balsa was at the swap meet.....

Tk2, I have sanded sheets in the past, but I get waves in them, and I hate sacrificing a 1/16" sheet... Cry no real answer I guess! I'll look at hobby lobby for 1/16"x3" maybe I can use your technique. I just had a thought, if I get 2 glass slats, and glue my sandpaper to one, JB weld 2 1/64" rods for spacers! And sand between them...should get a nice thin sheet! Cheesy
I have a friend here who has a glass place...I've gotten some of his throw-away pieces for free to make my 'beds'... Cool

Thank you tk2!!, I'm on a mission!

1/64th might be hard to find.
Did you know you can make a sanding block and lay metal wires parallel to each other and sand down to any thickness you want?  The wires become rails for the sanding block to ride on and give you a steady, stable thickness. The fine paper on the table helps your workpiece not slide all over the place.

Looks good and the wire was a nice solution.  You might want to consider small pieces of scrap balsa at the bottom of the windscreen inlaid between the stringers for tissue anchors.

GLAD you mentioned it!!!!!!
Planning to attend a local swap meet saturday, i hope to find some nice 1/64" balsa sheet, all mine stash is gone. but that 1/64" is great for following curves doing nice tissue anchor points. Roll Eyes
i must be getting older~
